What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Laboratory Research Associate, and why are they important?
What qualifications do you need to be a laboratory research associate?
What is a Laboratory Research Associate?
What are some common challenges Laboratory Research Associates face when managing multiple experiments simultaneously?
What is the difference between Laboratory Research Associate vs Laboratory Technician?
| Aspect | Laboratory Research Associate | Laboratory Technician |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant science field | Associate degree or certification in laboratory techniques |
| Work Environment | Research labs, often involved in experiments and data analysis | Laboratory settings focused on sample preparation and testing |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Research institutions, biotech, pharmaceuticals | Hospitals, clinical labs, manufacturing |
| Common Search & Comparison | Often compared for research roles, data analysis, and project support | Compared for technical support, sample handling, and testing tasks |
The Laboratory Research Associate typically holds a higher degree and is involved in experimental design, data analysis, and research projects. In contrast, Laboratory Technicians focus on sample processing, testing, and supporting laboratory operations. Both roles are essential in scientific settings but differ mainly in responsibilities and educational requirements.

Job description
Research Associate II – Synthetic Morphogenesis
The Allen Institute accelerates science for a healthier world through large-scale research designed to answer some of the most complex questions in biology. Our multi-disciplinary teams generate foundational knowledge, tools, and data to understand how our brain, cells, and immune system work. We share our work openly so others can build on it, move faster, and ask bigger questions. We drive discovery forward and create new possibilities for improving human health.
The goal of Cellscapes is to create the first holistic framework to predict how cells self-organize into complex cell communities and tissues in order to program an entirely new kind of synthetic tissue that can be used to ask focused questions about how cells behave, including in response to drug interventions.
We seek a motivated and versatile Research Associate II with excellent cell culture and genome engineering skills for an interdisciplinary role at the forefront of synthetic biology. This scientist will contribute to a new effort to program these state changes with synthetic biological circuits conferring morphogenetic cell behaviors in human iPS cells. The project will involve designing synthetic biological modules that control the fate specification, dynamics, and spatial patterning of cellular states and enable multicellular morphogenesis to understand and control behaviors associated with cellular morphogenesis in 3D multicellular stem cell cultures. These modules may include combinations of synthetic multistability circuits including MultiFate and related systems, signaling and adhesion systems such as SynNotch and SynCAMs, and various effectors of cellular mechanics. The successful candidate will collaborate within the team to perform experiments and analyses. This position will require creativity with relating these experimental approaches to multicellular systems.
At the Allen Institute, we believe that science is for everyone – and should be open to everyone. We are dedicated to combating biases and reducing barriers to STEM careers more broadly.
We also believe that science is better when it includes different perspectives and voices. We strive to make the Allen Institute a place where everyone feels like they belong and are empowered to do their best work in a supportive environment.
We are an equal-opportunity employer and strongly encourage people from all backgrounds to apply for our open positions.
A cover letter detailing your interest in this opportunity is required to be considered.
