Laboratory Logistics information

What is laboratory logistics?

Laboratory logistics refers to the management and coordination of supplies, equipment, samples, and data within a laboratory setting. This includes inventory control, ordering and receiving materials, ensuring proper storage conditions, and supporting the workflow of laboratory staff. Effective laboratory logistics are essential for maintaining compliance, minimizing downtime, and ensuring that scientific work can proceed efficiently and safely.

How does a laboratory logistics professional interact with other departments to ensure smooth operations?

Laboratory Logistics professionals play a crucial role in coordinating with various teams, including lab technicians, procurement, and quality control, to ensure timely delivery and storage of samples, reagents, and equipment. They often act as a bridge between the laboratory and external suppliers or internal stakeholders, addressing inventory needs and resolving supply chain challenges promptly. Effective communication and collaboration are essential, as any delays or miscommunications can impact research timelines or diagnostic testing. Regular meetings and updates with team members help streamline workflows and anticipate potential issues.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in laboratory logistics, and why are they important?

To excel in Laboratory Logistics, you need strong organizational abilities, attention to detail, and a background in supply chain management or laboratory operations, often supported by a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with inventory management software, laboratory information management systems (LIMS), and safety protocols is typically required. Effective communication, problem-solving, and teamwork are standout soft skills in this field. These competencies ensure accurate handling and timely delivery of laboratory materials, maintaining the smooth function and safety of lab operations.

Job description

Job Type
Full-time
Description
The Project Coordinator coordinates laboratory testing workflows and provides administrative support at TRI's Austin laboratory after scope and authorization are established. Client outreach is part of the job: regular outbound calls and emails to active, past, and dormant accounts. This is a long-term position, not a step toward a project management title; coordinators advance by handling more client accounts and a wider range of laboratory work, with pay that grows to match. The work is client-facing and detail-heavy: the coordinator tracks active jobs, keeps project records straight, and keeps clients informed.
Responsibilities
Project Support
  • Maintain complete, accurate project records and organize project and sample information after authorization
  • Confirm receipt of approved work orders and set projects up for laboratory execution
  • Track active work as it moves through the laboratory

Client Communication & Outreach
  • Give clients factual status updates on testing and laboratory processing stages, following established procedures
  • Make regular outbound calls and emails to active, past, and dormant client accounts
  • Reactivate idle relationships, follow up on open quotes and proposals, and ask about upcoming testing needs
  • Pass new opportunities to laboratory or management staff for scoping and authorization

Workflow Coordination
  • Track internal tasks, testing status, and handoffs that keep daily laboratory work moving
  • Know the priority and sequence of active jobs
  • Document scheduling or workflow problems that could affect testing or reporting

Documentation & Data
  • Prepare, organize, and verify project and laboratory documentation
  • Enter, review, and reconcile data in the ERP and LIMS systems
  • Keep the records that support QA/QC, accreditation compliance, and traceability of client deliverables

Reporting
  • Help prepare, organize, and release laboratory reports
  • Check that reported results match laboratory records and project documentation
  • Join a rotating Saturday shift (once every 4-6 weeks, 2-4 hours) to review and distribute results
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Range: $24-$28 per hour (DOE)

Requirements
  • 4 years of relevant experience preferred, or an equivalent combination of experience and demonstrated capability in inside sales, project coordination, and administrative support roles
  • Comfortable making outbound client calls; outreach to inactive accounts is a regular part of the job
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage workload and schedules independently
  • Strong written and verbal communication; respect for people at all levels

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior exposure to laboratory operations
  • Experience with ERP or LIMS systems
