What is a laboratory helper?

Laboratory Helpers are support staff who assist scientists, technicians, and researchers in laboratory settings. Their duties often include preparing and cleaning equipment, organizing materials, maintaining a clean work environment, and helping with basic experiments under supervision. They play a crucial role in ensuring that laboratory operations run smoothly and efficiently. While they typically do not conduct advanced experiments, their work is essential for the daily functioning of the lab.

What does a laboratory helper do?

Laboratory Helpers play a crucial role in maintaining smooth lab operations by handling tasks such as preparing and cleaning equipment, organizing supplies, disposing of waste materials safely, and assisting senior technicians with basic experiments and sample collection. They often ensure that workspaces remain tidy and that essential materials are readily available, which helps minimize disruptions for scientists and researchers. By supporting routine functions and adhering to safety protocols, Laboratory Helpers contribute to an efficient and safe environment, allowing the research team to focus on more specialized tasks.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a laboratory helper?

To thrive as a Laboratory Helper, you need basic knowledge of laboratory procedures, attention to detail, and at least a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with laboratory equipment, safety protocols, and inventory management systems is often required. Reliability, good organizational skills, and the ability to follow instructions precisely are standout soft skills in this position. These competencies ensure accurate support for laboratory operations, maintain safety standards, and contribute to efficient workflow.

What is the difference between Laboratory Helper vs Laboratory Technician?

Job description

What if the work you did every day could impact the lives of people you know? Or all of humanity? At Illumina, we are expanding access to genomic technology to realize health equity for billions of people around the world. Our efforts enable life-changing discoveries that are transforming human health through the early detection and diagnosis of diseases and new treatment options for patients.Working at Illumina means being part of something bigger than yourself. Every person, in every role, has the opportunity to make a difference. Surrounded by extraordinary people, inspiring leaders, and world changing projects, you will do more and become more than you ever thought possible.

As a Systems Integration Engineer 1 at Illumina, you will work in a collaborative, teamoriented environment to help develop and test genomic analysis tools at the leading edge of research. You will contribute to the delivery of highquality, robust products through the integration of hardware, software, chemistry, and biological assay components. A key aspect of this role is executing structured experiments, diagnosing complex systemlevel issues, and collaborating with crossfunctional teams to drive problems to root cause.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform hands-on integration, testing and troubleshooting of DNA sequencing systems and assay platforms, with a focus on chemical or biochemical assay workflows
  • Execute system-level troubleshooting across biochemical assays, hardware, software, and application components
  • Investigate technical problems by analyzing data, forming hypotheses, and proposing practical solutions in collaboration with cross-functional colleagues
  • Track, log and communicate issues encountered during development using established documentation and issue-tracking processes
  • Apply analytical techniques and tools to analyze experimental and system-level data, identify trends, and support data-driven decision making
  • Execute design verification plans, collect and review data, and contribute to verification reports
  • Author and maintain clear documentation of experimental procedures, protocols, results, deviations, and observations
  • Work effectively within cross-functional project teams (research, product development, manufacturing, etc.)
  • Present technical findings, risks, and recommendations to engineering and scientific stakeholders

Minimum Requirements

  • Foundational understanding of, or keen interest to learn sequencing systems, assay platforms, and associated wet laboratory techniques
  • Handson wet laboratory experience (academic or industry) working with biochemical assays, instrumentation, or complex experimental workflows.
  • Broad scientific knowledge across disciplines such as molecular biology, chemistry, software, instrumentation, and data analysis
  • Ability to analyze and draw conclusions from large data sets
  • Familiarity with AI tools, scientific programming or scripting (e.g., Python) for data analysis is preferred
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively in technical discussions across assay, software, engineering, or manufacturing teams
  • Detailoriented, selfmotivated, and collaborative, with the ability to clearly communicate technical information to both technical and nontechnical audiences
  • Comfortable working in a fastpaced, multidisciplinary, and evolving research and development environment

Education/Experience

  • Typically requires 0 to 2 years of relevant professional experience (including internships, co-ops, or academic research)
  • Bachelors or Master's degree in engineering or science discipline (Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Biology, or a related field)
  • Complex system troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to think critically, learn quickly, and adapt to changing priorities and development needs.
  • Aptitude for independent research in addition to working well within a team

Strong preference will be given to individuals with intense curiosity about the world around them and demonstrated ability for digging deep into experimental methods and results.

The estimated base salary range for the Systems Integration Engineer 1 role based in the United States of America is: $68,400 - $102,600. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. The range reflects longterm growth in the role; therefore, most candidates are hired between the minimum and middle of the range. Placement depends on experience, skills, location, and internal equity. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package. We offer a wide range of benefits as innovative as our work, including access to genomics sequencing, family planning, health/dental/vision, retirement benefits, and paid time off.
We are a company deeply rooted in belonging, promoting an inclusive environment where employees feel valued and empowered to contribute to our mission.
