Under the direction of an Anatomic Pathologist, this job is responsible for daily activities associated with processing of tissues as received from surgical procedures along with the participation in the education of pathology residents and quality assurance activities that are associated with these processes.

Education
Required - Associate degree in a chemical, physical, biological, clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution OR
Bachelor's Degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution OR
Have at least 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution that, at a minimum include:
24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses OR
14 semester hours of science courses that include 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, AND 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology AND
Have laboratory training that includes either of the following: Completion of an accredited clinical laboratory training program OR at least 3 months of documented laboratory training in pathology / histology or cytology
Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)
  • Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of information.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally.
  • Must be proficient with Windows-style applications, various software packages specific to role and keyboard.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of quality, safety and compliance programs and ensures that these principles are applied in the Gross lab.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage stress in order to process a large volume of specimens effectively.
  • Ability to work in a controlled environment with exposure to chemicals, body fluids, blood borne pathogens, etc.

Job Duties
  • Performs gross examinations, dissection and description of tissues receive under the direct and indirect supervision of an Anatomic Pathologist and/or Pathologist Assistant
  • Ensures proper labeling of all specimens received; provides troubleshooting when there is a discrepancy.
  • Assists with frozen sections and fresh tissue triage with specimen division as needed.
  • Trans and educates laboratory personnel and residents in the processing of surgical tissues and post-mortem examinations as needed.
  • Collects and summarizes quality assurance data for reporting as needed.
  • Maintains autopsy database including cataloging of evidence and communicating with funeral homes regarding disposition of bodies as needed.
  • Participates in the development, implementation and maintenance of surgical pathology protocols.
  • Other related duties as required.
