Job description

Position Summary

At Stony Brook Medicine, a TH Instructional Support Assistant (Cytogenetics & Laboratory Qualify Systems Support Assistant) is a valuable member of the Department of Laboratories team.  This position encompasses responsibilities in both the Cytogenetics Laboratory and acts as a support in Laboratory Quality Systems Management.   Qualified candidates will demonstrate superior laboratory services for patient care and possess outstanding communication skills while adhering to our high standard of excellence.

Duties of a Cytogenetics & Laboratory Quality Systems Support Assistant may include the following but are not limited to:

  • Become proficient with electronic data processing systems.  This includes but is not limited to Cerner Powerchart, CoPath, Sunquest, Policy Manager and Lawson.
  • Accurate transcription and reporting of test results as directed, in CoPath and manual log.
  • Become familiar with all QA/QC functions and audits performed as well as associated documentation of these functions.
  • Maintain, and compile data and statistical reports for regulatory agency reporting or continuous quality monitoring, e.g. FISH control cutoff values, results for Blood Chromosome and FISH analyses data for children under 2 years of age and submit data NY DOH Congenital Malformations repository database, monthly CoPath and Sunquest statistic reports, etc. 
  • Create and implement new Quarterly Audits under the direction of the Quality Systems Manager.
  • Accession Specimens accurately utilizing both electronic and manual systems in place.
  • Assist in performing various administrative functions for the Cytogenetics laboratory staff, the Associate Technical Director and the Quality Systems Manager.
  • To serve as a professional role model in representing the Department of Laboratories.
  • To perform monthly inventory and maintain adequate levels of supplies.
  • To perform laboratory maintenance activities in compliance with regulatory standards to include but not limited to Temperature monitoring of equipment, glassware preparation, instrument sterilization, filing of patient folders and slides.
  • Answers the Telephone courteously at all times, relays messages accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Document all corrective actions taken when non-conformance occurs and deviates from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
  • Must understand and comply with all regulatory standards i.e., JCAHO, CAP, NYS DOH CLEP.
  • Will maintain specific knowledge of safe laboratory practices per departmental and institutional standards as well as external agency regulations.
  • Assist the Quality Systems Manager in the development of standardized forms for lab-wide use.
  • Assist the Quality Systems Manager with Reference Cards created for Lab Tests and Processes.
  • Responsible for Daily, Weekly, Monthly, Quarterly and Semi-annual Audits.
  • Perform additional Ad-Hoc QA projects as assigned.

Required Qualifications:  

  • Education level/Experience:  An associate degree with at least two years of clinical laboratory experience,
  • Knowledge of clinical laboratory operations, laboratory and/or hospital based information systems.
  • Excellent communications skills.
  • Clerical and Basic Computer skills (MC Office: Word, Excel, Powerpoint)

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Knowledge of Clinical Laboratory Regulations e.g., safety, quality systems, etc.
  • Minimum of one year experience in a hospital setting. 
  • Understanding of Medical Terminology.

  • Successfully complete a 4 panel drug screen
  • Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre employment screenings.
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

Anticipated Pay Range:

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position is $45,847 - $56,244 Base

The above salary range represents SBUH's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.  The specific salary offer will be based on the candidate's validated years of comparable experience.  Any efforts to inflate or misrepresent experience are grounds for disqualification from the application process or termination of employment if hired.

Some positions offer annual supplemental pay such as:

  • Location pay for UUP, CSEA & PEF full-time positions ($4000)
