Job Summary and Qualifications
  • Completes routine blood samples within 5 minutes and difficult cases in 15 minutes.
  • Completes procedures scheduled during shift without interfering with the quality of work.
  • Prioritizes work to achieve maximum efficiency; can adjust schedule in view of STAT orders, admissions, etc., and can obtain timed specimens within 10 minutes of time of order. Continually uses time to departmental advantage; performs well in emergency situations.
  • Maintains test tray in a sanitary and properly supplied condition at all times.
  • Greets patients in a courteous manner by introducing self and asking the patient to give their name. Greets public in a professional and cheerful manner at all times.
  • Verifies correct patient by checking the name on request with the name on the patient's wristband before the procedure is begun. Follows Laboratory policy on patient identification.
  • Labels test tube immediately after procedure is completed and initials the tube.
  • Maintains a professional appearance at all times.
  • Limits personal phone calls.
  • Attends to personal affairs to avoid interfering with work schedule.
  • Washes hands before and after each patient contact.
  • Disposes of used needles after use in sharps containers and does not recap needles.
  • Uses time between tests to departmental advantage by filing in with office work, putting away supplies, general household duties or performing other duties as necessary.
  • Seeks information or asks for assistance from appropriate personnel regarding patients who present difficulties.
  • Uses proper technique in obtaining blood samples. Demonstrates competence in all procedures required by a phlebotomist in accordance with institutional policies, particular emphasis on blood cultures, and blood samples.
  • Obeys institutional policies and procedures regarding patient care, with special attention to biohazard procedures.
  • Knows various needles, anticoagulants, special handling and preparation of tests that are to be performed.
  •  Assists in orientation and training of new staff/students as necessary.
  • Demonstrates competence in drawing and processing specimens for: Neonate Pediatric Adult Geriatric
  • Follows through on tests or procedures left from a previous shift, and reports any incomplete assignments to assure continuity of procedures.
  • Recognizes and performs duties that need to be performed although not directly assigned; regularly help others.
  • Maintains supplies and orders as necessary.
  • Increases knowledge of overall operation of the department in areas such as office procedures, ordering of supplies and availability of reports.
  • Performs as a self-starter who needs no reminders of duties and tasks that need to be completed.
  • Answers telephones and retrieves as much information as possible from files, rather than forwarding calls. Takes messages accurately
  • Distributes mail, files and processes paperwork in a timely manner.
  • Has general knowledge of laboratory procedures as it applies to the overall office.
  • Organizes and completes assigned tasks. Follows through with any incomplete paperwork to ensure continuity of patient care. Keep files in an accurate and orderly condition.
  • Attempts to understand the needs of others in relation to laboratory operations and uses good judgment when responding to their requests, especially physicians.
  • Consistently performs waived tests in with high level of competency and on a timely basis.
  • Assists CBCs and stains slides for differentials as directed by the medical technologist.
  • Maintains an in-depth knowledge of techniques, principles, and their inter-relationship well affecting test results.
