Job Summary:

Under direct supervision and following established procedures, performs duties necessary to assist with Fine Needle Aspiration services.  This includes the handling of pathological materials, slides, staining, and solutions.  Provides diversified administrative secretarial support, exercising independent judgment to maximize office efficiency and accuracy of schedules, logs, meetings, calendars, and communications.  Screens telephone calls and visitors, resolves issues, and composes correspondence as necessary.  Supports the Pathology leaders with interaction laboratory staff members, DMC management, and physicians regarding departmental policies, procedures, practices, and general information.  Assistant with required pathology related paperwork.  Oversees supplies, ensuring adequate level is maintained and ordering additional supplies when necessary. Interacts with other departments to arrange for ancillary testing, completing necessary billing and maintaining proper protocol for the separation of specimens.  Duties also include but are not limited to: answering telephone, assisting with pathology material archival needs; assisting laboratories across campus with needs and assisting Laboratory Assistants and other Laboratory staff members with certain duties.

    Maintain the Pathology offices, supplies and equipment.
    Responsible for office and lab supplies in Pathology, ensuring all are in good working order and available as needed.
    Safely work with numerous high-risk biologic and chemical hazards.
    Responsible for cleaning Pathology workspaces, including all instruments and trays, washing tables and benches, and ensuring the work area is safely managed at all times.
    Follow all hospital and laboratory policies and procedures regarding security, safety, quality, documentation, and privacy needs.
    Performs other related duties as assigned. 
 

1.    High school diploma or equivalent.
2.    Two to three years of progressively more responsible experience in pathology is strongly preferred.

Facility Description

DMC University Laboratories (DMCUL) is a regional, integrated laboratory system providing services to the eight hospitals of Detroit Medical Center.  DMC University Laboratories evolved in 1993 and is comprised of Core Laboratories,  Specialty Laboratories, two  rapid response hospital laboratories, Centralized Stat Lab, Centralized Blood Bank Lab, and full service outreach infrastructure which includes patient service centers, remote ambulatory laboratories, marketing staff, courier system and billing department. The DMC University Laboratories service area covers the entire Southeast Michigan market, and is growing at a rapid pace with the following outstanding features:  Test menu of over 1,000 tests, which includes high end specialty tests.  Less than 1% of our tests are sent to outside reference laboratories.  Provide reference laboratory services to many of the other healthcare systems in Southeastern Michigan and several out of state facilities.
