Job Summary
Oversees the management of the laboratory buildings and equipment on assigned campus(es) under the supervision of the Director, Natural Science Lab. Monitors budget balances, and purchases lab supplies, educational materials and minor equipment based on prioritized needs. Consults with faculty and lab personnel to determine any laboratory needs and assists the Director, Natural Science Lab in the general oversight of the instructional laboratory. Provides supervision of all laboratory staff, technicians, support specialists and student assistants.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Applicants may be asked to demonstrate any or all of the following duties:
  1. Provides general oversight of laboratory facilities. Supervises and directs staff in support of laboratory classes:includes determination of work schedules , course work assignments, training, professional and technical skill development, performance evaluation and discipline.
  2. Reviews and monitors department budget balances and purchases needed laboratory supplies and educational materials for all science classes and related activities. Reviews and evaluates the supply requests provided by staff and faculty and sets priorities accordingly.
  3. Identifies and works with vendors, obtains quotes as needed and manages the purchasing process, including submission of requisitions, tracking of orders, receipt of supplies and reconciliation of invoices.
  4. Assists lab staff and faculty with the identification of minor and capital equipment needs within the instructional laboratories as part of the budget proposal process. Helps with assessment and justification of requested equipment as it applies to the College's Strategic Priorities and Goals. Provides recommendations to Director, Natural Science Lab .
  5. Oversees that the laboratory facilities are in proper working order. Assesses and evaluates the need for repairs or maintenance of equipment by an outside vendor. Informs Director, Natural Science Lab of equipment repair/maintenance issues and makes arrangements for repair work.
  6. Provides oversight of the inventory of minor and capital equipment, chemicals, biological agents, supplies and instructional materials. Ensures that records are updated and accurate. Manages and supervises lab staff with the use of lab equipment, materials and supplies to meet daily instructional requirements within all areas of the laboratories.
  7. Manages laboratory buildings and educational equipment within the science labs, assuring readiness for daily use by staff, faculty and students. Identifies major and minor maintenance and safety issues and takes corrective actions. Reports issues to Director, Natural Science Labas well as the appropriate College department(s).
  8. Coordinates and ensures provision of proper lab orientation and training of lab staff, faculty and students: includes proper use of equipment, workplace safety trainings, proper handling of chemicals and biological agents and proper handling of hazardous and biomedical waste.
  9. Provides Director, Natural Science Lab with reports relating to laboratory inventories, preventative maintenance inspections, safety compliance and trainings, equipment evaluations for repairs and replacements, generation and disposal of hazardous and biomedical waste and budgetary balances and expenditures.
  10. Works with established outside vendors on the coordination of hazardous and biomedical waste disposal and removal. Ensures that all lab staff conducts proper handling, packaging and labeling of hazardous and biomedical waste, ensuring that all local, state and federal rules and regulations are followed and that compliance is maintained.
  11. Coordinates with internal groups such as SCFCS, student clubs, Health Sciences, etc. regarding lab room usage, material needs and staffing support for their science lab activities.
  12. Coordinates, plans and supervises science outreach activities and community events with local institutions and community partners Discusses and collaborates with the Director, Natural Science Lab any event planning and coordination as well as associated costs. Provides billing information to Business Services or appropriate designee.
  13. Provides status updates as requested by Director, Natural Science Lab for laboratory activities, general operations, facilities issues, building maintenance, staffing matters, instructor needs and students employment.
  14. Works closely with the Director, Natural Science Lab on all staffing needs and takes a lead role with the hiring of all laboratory staff and support personnel: includes posting of open positions, review of applicants, conducting interviews, evaluating final candidates, training, supervision and performance evaluations.
  15. Performs other duties as assigned.

More than two years of direct supervisory experience, including responsibility for hiring, firing, performance management, training and coaching is preferred.

Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
