Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Support Services Supervisor, the LST is responsible for providing quality customer oriented laboratory services including specimen procurement, specimen processing and related specialized procedures, and service to effectively communicate information to users of the Laboratory Services in order to ensure the department is able to operate efficiently and to successfully fulfill its mission. LSTs also provide training and guidance to less experienced laboratory support technicians.

The Lab Support Technician bridges the gap between clinical staff and pathologists. They process incoming surgical and biological specimens, manage laboratory equipment, and maintain meticulous records. Their duties ensure pathologists have correctly prepared samples and clinical data to diagnose diseases and conditions accurately

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Specimen Processing

  • Understands study protocols and processes specimens accordingly.

  • Prepares the workstation with all essential supplies to ensure smooth processing of specimens.

  • Receives and verifies identification of specimens according to laboratory policies and procedures.

  • Labels specimens according to laboratory policies and procedures.

  • Distributes specimens to appropriate lab sections with in specific time frames.

  • Centrifuges and aliquots specimens, and follows all special handling instructions.

  • Processes, prepares, and stores specimens for send out to reference laboratories.

  • Processes random and 24 hour urine specimens.

  • Monitors and records daily temperatures and performs scheduled maintenance of equipment.

Customer Service and Communication

  • Communicates and cooperates to improve patient services and the quality of each patient's experience.

  • Demonstrates excellent communication skills with patients, staff members, and phone customers.

  • Establishes positive, professional relationships with coworkers and managers to enhance the efficient operation of the department.

  • Delivers reports in a timely fashion.

  • Respects and follows BMC's rules of confidentiality.

  • Consistently follows through and conveys accurate information .

  • Answers the telephone according to department policy and procedure.

  • Completes all appropriate logs for documentation and troubleshooting, and communicates to supervisor.

  • Incorporates Medical Center Values into all undertakings.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

  • High School Diploma.

EXPERIENCE:

  • One year of Laboratory and specimen processing experience is preferred.

Compensation Range:

$20.12- $26.02
