Job Summary
The Allgeier laboratory in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Michigan is seeking a Research Lab Technician. The lab focuses on ecosystem ecology, food web ecology, coastal and coral reef ecology, global change ecology, fisheries, and sustainability.
This position is to support a recently funded multi-year NSF project that will focus on understanding the drivers of coral and fish production under challenging environmental conditions created by human impacts. There is potential for independent research within this position and a high level of independence is encouraged.
Responsibilities*
The selected candidate will assist in research projects involving ecological and environmental science, including: field-based research in The Bahamas and the Dominican Republic - involving coral transplantation and collection for analysis, fish collection for tissue samples and physical and chemical sample collection, laboratory analyses - involving processing samples for isotope or chemical analyses and biogeochemical analyses, and computer data entry and analysis. Working and organizing teams of undergraduate researchers in the lab at the University of Michigan and other basic laboratory management will also be part of the duties.
Required Qualifications*
  • Graduation from a College or University with a bachelor's degree in a natural science discipline such as Biology, Ecology, Chemistry, or Environmental Sciences.
  • Experience in field research under challenging conditions.
  • Experience in detailed, high-quality laboratory analyses of samples (preferably associated with biogeochemistry and/or nutrient analyses for N and P in aqueous and tissue samples - this later part is not required).
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to lead groups of undergraduates in laboratory research.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication (oral & written) skills.

Desired Qualifications*
  • SCUBA training and field experience
  • Experience working with coral transplantation
  • Ability to organize data for publications and proposals.
  • Experience in operating and coordinating research collection and analysis with minimum supervision.
  • Experience in field collection of environmental samples under difficult conditions.
  • Possession of a Master's degree in a related natural science field.
