PHILOSOPHY STATEMENT

ROLE OVERVIEW

Independently performs phlebotomy procedures and processes specimens, including waive testing, as directed by the ordering physician. This position also conducts clerical and record keeping activities for the Laboratory Department. Frequent contacts are made with physicians, nurses, patients, other hospital personnel, laboratory staff and hospital visitors.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/ACCOUNTABILITIES

1. Exhibits behaviors that are consistent with the Mission, Philosophy, and Values of Pershing General Hospital and Nursing Home as well as the culture and objectives of Pershing General Hospital and Nursing Home. All employees are expected to work as needed in providing health and wellness services in the communities within Pershing General Hospital and Nursing Home.

2. Accurately performs specimen collection, processing, and waive testing according to laboratory policy and procedure and understands the requirements for obtaining the correct and optimal specimen per orders received to assure quality patient care. Performs correct processing of specimens after collection assuring all pertinent data is included as required by policy.

3. Prepares specimens for shipping utilizing appropriate shipping method and correct packaging, accurately performs all computer entry functions, entering patient information and maintaining accurate tracking of specimens to ensure accurate and timely documentation and results.

4. Communicates with clients, nursing staff physicians and other associates, responding to inquiries concerning specimen requirements, testing location, and results’ availability.

5. Performs clerical and record keeping activities for the Laboratory Department including answering the telephone, screening and routing calls as appropriate, completes and files assigned paperwork, maintains stock and inventory of the phlebotomy area to ensure accurate documentation and retrieval and uninterrupted services.

In addition to the responsibilities described above, the role may include other responsibilities and duties as assigned on occasion, based on Pershing General Hospital and Nursing Home’s needs or requirements.

Requirements:


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

· Education/Experience: High School Graduate or GED

· Must successfully complete an approved phlebotomy course or six (6) months experience of on the job training as a phlebotomist. Knowledge of Medical Terminology preferred. State of Nevada Lab Assistant License. AHA CPR/BLS preferred.

· Technical Skills:

Ability to learn and follow established policies, procedures and schedules

Ability to follow verbal and written instructions

Ability to maintain accurate records and attention to detail

Ability to perform phlebotomy and drug screen collection procedures and detect variables in procedures that may cause problems or errors.

Ability to work under stressful conditions

Must use tact and be professional with patients, visitors and employees at all times

· Other qualifications/certificate/license:

Apply and obtain licensure by the State of Nevada as a Laboratory Assistant within six (6) months of employment.
