Job description

ESA seeks a highly motivated Cultural Resource Specialist with 2-7 years of experience in leading field teams & projects, & writing reports to join our Northwest Cultural Resource Team. Strong preference for candidates located within a commutable distance to the Portland Metro area. Qualified candidates near Salem, Eugene, Bend or within a commutable distance of Portland areas will also be considered.  Qualified candidates must be open to occasional travel as this role may involve some travel for site visits, projects, field work, and in-person team collaboration as needed.

Work samples may be requested as a step in the interview process.

Who You Are 

  • You are an effective team member experienced in archaeological monitoring, surveys, and documentation of archaeological, and/or paleontological resources in accordance with applicable local, state, and federal guidelines and requirements. You live in Oregon to support local work. If you are available to travel to remote work locations, we will consider candidates from elsewhere in Oregon as well. Potential for travel to Washington and Idaho as well.
  • You have previous professional experience with writing technical reports. 
  • You have access to OARRA or are qualified to obtain access to OARRA.
  • You hold a Master's degree or higher in archaeology/anthropology or related field. You have a demonstrated ability to use app-based software for field recordation and mapping.
  • You must be Secretary of Interior-Qualified Archaeologist.
  • You must be certified (or able to be certified) as an Oregon State-Qualified archaeologist.
  • You are familiar with working on active construction sites,
  • You must be knowledgeable of archaeological materials common to the region and have a minimum of 2-7 years of field experience in Oregon. 
  • You enjoy fieldwork and can walk long distances carrying a backpack; and are able to lift at least 50 pounds. You are confident working outside, in remote and rural settings, as well as in urban environments. Physical outdoor work may include, but may not be limited to, work in all types of weather, traversing uneven ground and sometimes steep terrain in vegetated environments, agricultural fields, arid lands, and along stream banks. You may be exposed to inclement weather and uncomfortable working conditions. Some early morning, late night and/or weekend work, as well as long hours may be required.
  • You possess a valid driver's license and have experience driving 4 wheel-drive vehicles off-road.
  • Public speaking skills are strongly preferred, but not required.
  • Preference given to candidates with previous lab experience preferred, but not required.
  • You must have previous experience leading field teams & projects

What You Will Do for ESA

ESA is looking for Full-time archaeological field director to support field projects in Oregon. Qualified candidates can demonstrate the ability to perform all aspects of archaeological monitoring and familiarity working on construction sites, coordinating with construction personnel, interacting with Native American monitors, and writing sections of reports. Successful candidates will fulfill the following duties:

  • Monitor construction activities and identify archaeological resources;
  • Effectively communicate with construction crews and project personnel;
  • Write and maintain written daily survey, monitoring, recordation, and cataloging logs, including utilizing electronic data collection tools and GIS mapping applications.
