Job description

Saint Anselm College, a private, liberal arts college in the Benedictine tradition, is seeking a full-time, temporary (mid-August through mid-December with a possible renewal) Lab Manager in the Department of Chemistry. Reporting to the Department Chair of Chemistry and Forensic Science, the Lab Manager will supervise and coordinate daily laboratory operations for a College science department, including lab set-up/breakdown, inventory maintenance, budget tracking, course/lab planning and scheduling, and supervision of lab assistants. To prepare for and teach science labs.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

General

  • Maintain inventory of lab supplies, instrumentation and protective equipment (including all gases)
  • Ensure that all freshman and sophomore labs are stocked and set-up prior to lab meetings.
  • Break-down freshman and sophomore labs
  • Maintain clean, safe and well-organized labs, prep rooms, stockrooms, and work spaces
  • Supervise payroll and work-study students
  • Take appropriate measures to deal with laboratory accidents
  • Transfer chemical waste in coordination with the Chemical Hygiene Officer
  • Research and request quotes for instrumentation
  • General maintenance of department instrument holdings including (not limited to) Regular nitrogen fill of NMR and Nitrogen supply for LC/MS
  • Supervise part-time staff and/or student assistants in setting up labs, unpacking orders and storage of supplies, and the like.
  • Carry out various special projects.

Teaching

  • Plan, supervise and coordinate daily laboratory operations of assigned science lab.
  • Coordinate with faculty an appropriate lab syllabus and rubrics for grading.
  • Regularly check-in with course faculty to the alignment of course and assigned teaching lab.
  • Prepare materials, equipment, paperwork, and lectures for specific labs.
  • Teach lab courses and grade lab work in a timely manner.
  • Supervise all lab activities, ensuring adherence to proper safety standards.

Budget

  • Work with department Chair to generate an annual budget.
  • Purchase all materials and equipment for the department.
  • Generate and approve purchase orders.
  • Insure that invoices are paid.
  • Maintain inventory and purchase records.
  • Track lab expenditures and budget standing.

Supervision

Administrative and functional supervision of part-time lab instructors and/or student assistants.

QUALIFICATIONS

Master's degree preferred in chemistry or other appropriate discipline plus two to four years of relevant laboratory experience, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.

  • Solid base of general knowledge in the sciences.
  • Broad base of technical knowledge related to science laboratory management.
  • Good basic supervisory skills.
  • Good lab teaching skills.
  • Good basic organizational, administrative and bookkeeping skills.
  • Good basic computer skills (word processing and spreadsheet applications).
  • Good understanding of OSHA and related Hazardous Waste Management regulations.
