Job description

Job Description

Under limited supervision, performs phlebotomy, processes specimens, handles client inquiries, conducts waived testing, contributes to pre-analytic laboratory tasks and assists with bedside procedures.

Schedule: Night shift - Monday thru Friday 8:00pm-4:30am plus every other weekend and every other major holiday

Responsibilities
  • Perform venipuncture and capillary puncture to collect blood specimens from patients.
  • Ensure patient comfort and safety during the phlebotomy process.
  • Receive and accession specimens into the laboratory information system (LIS).
  • Prepare and aliquot specimens for various laboratory tests following established protocols.
  • Provide information regarding specimen collection, test requisitions, and laboratory procedures.
  • Address inquiries and concerns, escalating complex issues to the appropriate personnel.
  • Assist in the preparation and setup of laboratory equipment and instruments.
  • Ensure the proper handling and transportation of specimens within the laboratory.
  • Places orders, inventories supplies, equipment and requisitions as needed.
  • Provides in-service training and precepts lab assistants and phlebotomists.
  • Participates in developing best practices in clinical workflows.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Ability to work independently within established guidelines, apply problem-solving skills, meet deadlines and meet urgent patient, provider, and system needs
  • Ability to collaborate with laboratory staff to maintain a clean and organized work environment.
  • Ability to perform waived testing procedures according to established protocols and regulatory guidelines.
  • Knowledge of recording and maintaining accurate documentation of waived test results.
  • Ability to verify the accuracy of patient information and specimen labeling.
  • Knowledge of labeling, documenting, and preparing collected specimens for transport to the laboratory.
  • Knowledge of relevant laboratory safety and infection control protocols.
  • Knowledge of laboratory information systems (LIS) is an asset.

EDUCATION:

  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Completion of a certified phlebotomy program is preferred.
Required Skills
  • 5 years' experience in phlebotomy and specimen processing within a clinical laboratory setting
