Job description

POSITION SUMMARY
Perform administrative and clinical duties under the direction of a physician or other provider/clinical personnel. Administrative duties may include scheduling appointments, maintaining electronic medical records, billing, and coding information for insurance purposes. Clinical duties may include taking and recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination, drawing blood, and administering medications as directed by physician.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  1. Prepare treatment rooms for patient examinations, keeping rooms neat and clean; discarding waste, needles and other biohazard waste according to established protocols,
  2. Greet and log in patients arriving at office or clinic
  3. Interview patients to obtain medical information; measure, take and record and enter vital signs, weight, and height, medical history, lab or test results in electronic medical records. Assess physical conditions of patients to aid in diagnosis or treatment
  4. Show patients to examination rooms and prepare them for the physician
  5. Assist physicians in the examination and treatment of patients, handing them instruments or materials or performing such tasks as giving injections or removing sutures
  6. Perform routine laboratory tests and sample analyses. Collect blood, tissue, or other laboratory specimens, log the specimens, and prepare them for testing
  7. May operate equipment to administer routine diagnostic tests
  8. Change dressings on wounds; apply bandages, dressings, or splints
  9. Prepare and administer immunizations or medications as directed by a physician. Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets, or physicians' instructions to patients
  10. Obtain authorization for drug refills and provide prescription information to pharmacies
  11. Assist with referral process; contact medical facilities or departments to schedule patients for additional tests, x-rays/MRIs or other diagnostic services and/or admission
  12. Clean and sterilize instruments and dispose of contaminated supplies
  13. Perform general office duties, such as answering telephones, taking dictation, or completing insurance forms. Schedule appointments for patients
  14. Conduct inventory and order medical, lab, office supplies or equipment
  15. Maintain and follow established infection control procedures
  16. Obtain prior-authorizations from insurers for referrals
  17. Participate in the development of nursing protocols, accreditation, quality and other programs identified to improve patient care

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. One (1) year of experience in patient care or home care.
2. High School Diploma or GED.
3. Certificate of Completion in Medical Assistant Program preferred.
4. Current certification as a Medical Assistant.
5. Current CPR certification.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each responsibility satisfactorily. These requirements are representative, but not all-inclusive, of the knowledge, skill, and ability required for this position.
1. Knowledge and skills sufficient to perform a range of nursing care as a medical/nursing assistant and sufficient experience to serve as a responsible member of the clinical team.
2. Knowledge and skill sufficient to perform procedures, use equipment and supplies for the purpose of providing patient care to assigned patients.
3. Knowledge of terminology and skills sufficient to report the patient's physical and emotional reactions for the purpose of effective communication with nursing and medical personnel and for recording and reporting pertinent information for inclusion in patient care plans.
4. Knowledge of the unique needs, clinical skills and client care standards appropriate to the age ranges served: child and adolescents.
5. Knowledge of human body structure, function, illnesses and diseases and skill sufficient to communicate with patients, nursing/medical staff and family members.
6. Knowledge of the electronic data entry systems and computer operations.
7. Knowledge of and understanding of HIPAA and the Privacy Act.
8. Ability to function independently at times and the ability to be self- directed.
9. Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
10. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite; Windows Explorer (electronic file-handling), Microsoft Word; Microsoft Excel; internet software; and electronic database health records systems.
11. Basic operation of a workstation (turning on/off, knowledge of basic functions and components). Use/storage/maintenance of multiple usernames and passwords.
12. Computer-related problem-solving skills through the use of available trainings and help desk.
13. Ability to give full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
