Position Summary Information
Job Description Summary:
  • Students filling the position will assist in the preparation of undergraduate laboratories and graduate research projects related to steel, concrete, wood, masonry, and composite materials in the SETRL (Structural Engineering Teaching & Research Laboratory).

  • Students will be expected to work independently and together with graduate students, faculty and staff. In addition to assisting with the preparation of laboratory experiments, students will also be expected to aid in the organization and collection of data, general lab maintenance, and cleanup activities. Students should expect to gain hands on knowledge of structural engineering materials and construction practices, which will enhance their undergraduate experience and further prepare them for graduate school or future employment.

Requirements:
  • Student must be enrolled in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering with an interest in structural engineering.
  • Some proficiency in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office is expected.

Additional Information:
Physical Demands Summary:
After the proper training is complete, students will be expected to operate the following tools and equipment: horizontal band saw, milling machine, drill press, annular cutter, circular saw, compound miter saw, concrete/brick saw, angle grinder, concrete vibrator, concrete mixer, and others. Operation of the SETRL overhead crane may also be part of the daily tasks, after appropriate OSHA training conducted by VU Environmental Health and Safety.
