Primary Responsibilities

Under the general direction of the Pathologists’ Assistant group assigned Pathologist and the Pathologists’ Assistant Supervisor, the Pathologists’ Assistant (PA) will be responsible for the gross examination and dissection of submitted anatomic pathology specimens and postmortem examinations, including the dictation of gross descriptions, according to the accepted guidelines established by the pathologists.


Essential Functions

  • Gross description and complete dissection of all simple and complex surgical specimens.
  • Autopsy prosection with autopsy assistant.
  • Complete frozen section service; performing frozen sectioning of specimens requiring an intraoperative consultation.
  • Specimen photography and radiography.
  • Assist in certain specialized procedures or projects as designated by the Pathologists.
  • Tissue procurement for special studies.
  • Digital slide scanning for remote preliminary diagnosis and slide sharing.
  • Accessing the patient’s electronic medical record to determine appropriate handling of surgical pathology specimens based on the clinical history and radiology imaging.
  • Working with Carolinas Healthcare System anatomic laboratory personnel to ensure quality and timely pathology reporting.
  • Managing gross room requirements (supplies and equipment).
  • In general, a professional manner and demeanor is expected at all times to facilitate a cooperative working relationship with the anatomic pathology laboratory personnel, pathologist, and staff. Neatness, cleanliness, and organization are essential.


Educational/Training Requirements

  • NAACLS from an Accredited Pathologists' Assistant Training Program


Experience Requirements

  • 1+ years of experience with highly complex specimens in a fast-paced environment a plus


Skills and Abilities

  • Highly skilled communicator regarding specimen processing for frozen section, gross pathology &/or autopsy pathology.
  • Strong attention to detail to be able to recognize important and sometimes subtle gross abnormalities with knowledge of how to submit these in sections to arrive at proper diagnosis.
  • Knowledge of current computer software and laboratory systems.
