Job description

Position Description The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County is seeking Traffic Signal Technicians 1 for the Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure (NDOT).The Incumbent performs entry-level technical work in the installation, maintenance, operation, and repair of various types of traffic control devices including electro-mechanical traffic signals, Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) and cameras used to view traffic flow throughout Nashville. Conducts entry-level wiring into signal boxes on camera installations. The Incumbent performs related duties as required

Nashville's transportation network includes traffic signal upgrades to ensuring timely operations for safer intersections and sidewalks in support of the Vision Zero initiative. The Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure delivers a range of services, and the nearly 400 employees work around the clock to ensure a multimodal system that offers choice and better connects neighborhoods, residents, businesses and visitors to the place that they need and want to go to in a safe manner. These employees are responsible for over 2,200 miles of public roadways and rights-of-way, over 6,000 streets, over 300 bridges, 835 traffic signals and over 1,200 miles of bike/sidewalk lanes and much more.

Big events in Nashville consist of CMA Festival, Stanley Cup Finals, Titans games, and any number of special events. These require big preparation and big clean-up, and the Nashville Department of Transportation employees are up for the challenge. Typical Duties Maintains and keeps NDOT's Adaptive Signal Control Technology working at a high level of performance.

Installs and maintains electronic and traffic signal equipment such as audible pedestrian button, wireless communication, and conflict monitors. Improves and maintains existing signalized intersections, warning beacons, and pedestrian crossings. Tests, diagnoses, and maintains various electronic equipment related to NDOT's upgraded traffic signals and communications.

Installs temporary and permanent traffic control devices within NDOT's guideline to divert traffic and ensure public safety. Performs preventive maintenance which includes participating in the use, care, repair, and operation of traffic signals and street lighting circuits. Troubleshoots traffic signals and streetlight circuits that are attached to traffic signals.

Adheres to the NDOTs preventative maintenance practices and scheduling. Reads and understands blueprints specifically related to the installation of traffic signals systems. Handles secondary electrical feed that power traffic signals on metal or wood poles.

Performs data entry of daily work ticket assignments in the KorWeb ticket system and other computer software. Controls pedestrians and traffic while installing signals and/or lighting using cones and barricades. Operates a bucket truck to repair malfunctioning traffic signals.

Participates in on-the-job training or attends training seminars. Ensures adherence to safe work practices and procedures. Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma and one (1) year of skilled labor related experience in construction, building maintenance or experience maintaining and repairing solid state equipment.

All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government. Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Experience with computer driven traffic control systems. Knowledge of, and experience in state of art integrated circuitry, transistorized components and diagnostic test equipment.
