POSITION SUMMARY

Therapeutics Development & Supply (TDS) is the bridge between scientific discovery and clinical application, encompassing Chemistry, Manufacturing and Controls (CMC), Device development, and clinical supply chain. This organization ensures that every molecule, modality and delivery system is robustly developed, scaled, and supplied under rigorous and regulatory standards.

The R&D Data Science organization is seeking a Director, Data, Data Science and AI to lead a team of data product engineers, data scientists, and ontology developers in support of the Therapeutics Development and Supply organization. This people leader role is responsible for building and scaling the data engineering, semantic, ontology, and knowledge graph capabilities that underpin all AI/ML and analytics work across TDS. You will lead a team of 5+ individual contributors and partner with cross-functional teams across R&D, DDSAI, and J&J IT to deliver AI-ready, governed, and reusable data products for TDS.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Data & Data Product Leadership

  • Partner to define and execute the TDS Data Product strategy aligned to TDS and DDSAI priorities; build a multi-year roadmap for data products and ontology that enable AI/ML and GenAI priorities for TDS
  • Define and deliver high-quality, AI-ready data products that serve TDS lighthouse projects and foundational analytics needs.
  • Lead the design, build, and optimization of scalable data product pipelines and platforms that integrate TDS data from diverse sources (ELNs, MES, LIMS, SAP, quality systems, clinical supply).
  • Deploy data quality standards, lineage tracking, and governance practices aligned with enterprise and GxP requirements.
  • Quality Safety & Compliance: Ensure data integrity, data model validation, computerized system compliance, and transparent data model interpretability in regulated environments

Semantic Layer & Ontology Strategy

  • Co-deliver the TDS-specific semantic layer strategy: ontologies, reference data, controlled vocabularies, knowledge graph development, and integration with enterprise canonical models.
  • Partner with DDSAI's Data Strategy & Products team to ensure alignment with R&D-wide data architecture and ontology governance.
  • Support TDS data scientists with scalable platforms to develop, maintain, and scale TDS ontologies, KGs and reference data

People Leadership & Cross-Functional Partnership

  • Recruit, develop, and lead a team of data product engineers, ontology developers, and data scientists.
  • Establish and maintain dotted-line operating model with DDSAI's Data Strategy & Products leadership team

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Advanced degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or a related quantitative field.
  • 10+ years of experience in data engineering, data architecture, or data science platform development, with at least 3 years in a people leadership role.
  • Deep expertise in modern data stack technologies: cloud-based architectures (AWS, Snowflake), Python, SQL, graph databases, and semantic technologies, including knowledge graphs
  • Demonstrated experience building and scaling data teams that deliver enterprise-grade data products.
  • Strong cross-functional leadership skills with the ability to influence and align across technical and business stakeholders at the Senior Director and VP level.

Preferred

  • Experience in pharmaceutical R&D, life sciences manufacturing, or regulated (GxP) environments.
  • Familiarity with ontology engineering (OWL, RDF, SKOS), knowledge graphs, and FAIR data principles.
  • Experience with MLOps platforms and practices (model registries, feature stores, automated retraining pipelines).
  • Track record of partnering with IT and data platform organizations to co-own technical architecture decisions.

Why This Role Is Unique

You will build the data and AI foundation for one of the most ambitious digital transformations in pharmaceutical R&D. Your team's work - the pipelines, semantic models, and ML infrastructure - will directly determine whether TDS can scale AI from lighthouse pilots to enterprise-grade, autonomous decision-making systems.
