What is a knowledge graph architect?

Knowledge Graph Architects are professionals who design, develop, and maintain knowledge graphs—data structures that organize information into interconnected entities and relationships. They combine expertise in data modeling, semantic technologies, and ontologies to enable advanced data integration, search, and analytics within organizations. Their work helps businesses extract meaningful insights from complex datasets by structuring information in ways that are both machine-readable and semantically rich.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a knowledge graph architect?

To thrive as a Knowledge Graph Architect, you need expertise in data modeling, semantic technologies, graph databases, and a strong background in computer science or information systems. Familiarity with tools like RDF, SPARQL, OWL, Neo4j, and experience with data integration platforms or cloud-based data services is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder management skills are essential to translate complex data needs into scalable knowledge graph solutions. These competencies enable effective design, implementation, and maintenance of knowledge graphs, which are critical for deriving actionable insights from complex data landscapes.

What are some typical challenges knowledge graph architects face when integrating data from diverse sources?

Knowledge Graph Architects often encounter challenges related to data heterogeneity, including varying data formats, inconsistent naming conventions, and differing semantics across multiple systems. Successfully integrating these disparate data sources requires designing robust ontologies, mapping relationships, and resolving conflicts to ensure data consistency and usability. Collaboration with domain experts, data engineers, and business stakeholders is essential to align technical solutions with business needs, making strong communication skills and adaptability crucial in this role.

This role is more than just coding. As a lead full stack developer, you will oversee a team as they learn new tools and techniques and identify needed system improvements. You will help clients overcome their most difficult challenges using the latest architectural approaches, tools, and technologies while ensuring the solution considers the current architecture and operating environment as well as future functionality and enhancements.

You Have
  • Experience developing software using Python or Java
  • Experience in data modeling, including normalization of data and working with metrics
  • Experience developing and maintaining web‑based server applications and implementing algorithms that interface with relational databases such as MySQL or PostgreSQL
  • Experience developing task automation using AWS API
  • Experience with periodic or streaming data
  • Experience with Linux and shell scripting
  • Ability to design, develop, and implement data processing workflows
  • Ability to develop and optimize data structures within and between routines and for data storage and retrieval using JSON, YAML, or NoSQL Databases
  • TS/SCI clearance with a polygraph
  • Bachelor's degree in a Computer Science field and 14+ years of experience with software engineering in a Linux environment, or 18+ years of experience with software engineering in a Linux environment in lieu of a degree
Nice If You Have
  • Experience with unstructured databases, including Mongo or Elasticsearch, and graph databases, including Neo4J
  • Experience with implementation of test environments for automated code validation
  • Experience working with containers
  • Experience developing CI/CD pipelines with GitLab CI
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IAC) and tooling, including Terraform

  • Experience developing pipelines using the AWS API, including Lambda and Step functions
  • Knowledge of network protocols such as NMP or BGP
  • Ability to work in an ambiguous, fast‑paced, highly collaborative, and team‑oriented environment and balance long‑ and short‑term taskings
Clearance

Applicants selected will be subject to a security investigation and may need to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information; TS/SCI clearance with polygraph is required.
