Duties & Responsibilities
Purpose of Position:
Under direct supervision, performs clinical laboratory procedures that encompass the scope of practice of a clinical laboratory technician, in accordance with Article 165 of the New York State Education Law. All personnel perform related work as required.
Under direct supervision of a clinical laboratory technologist, supervisor or director, as appropriate, with limited exercise of independent judgment, performs clinical laboratory procedures and examinations.
Examples of Typical Tasks:
1. Obtains, collects, and accessions specimens and labels with name, date, and source. Stores and preserves specimens and disposes of completed specimens.
2. Prepares specimens and performs or assists in the performance of routine tests and analyses, employing standard controls in accordance with stipulated procedures utilizing manual or automated techniques.
3. Prepares reagents and media according to prescribed formula. Maintains upkeep of designated laboratory instruments before and after usage.
4. Records results and submits reports of diagnostic tests, utilizing safeguards such as delta checks and quality control.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Valid certification as a clinical laboratory technician or a limited permit issued by the New York State Education Department (NYSED).
Specid Note:
1. Successful completion of an appropriate training program for phlebotomy (satisfactory to the laboratory director) must be completed prior to an individual performing such work.
