High School Science Tutor Part-Time (AP & College-Prep Subjects)

Teacher Tutors

Livingston, NJ • On-site

$40 - $50/hr

Part-time

Re-posted 20 days ago

Job description

Teacher Tutors is hiring high school teachers to join our team as part-time tutors, working one-on-one with students in grades 9 through 12. We're specifically looking for teachers with classroom experience in AP and college-prep (CP) level courses - the people who've actually taught the curriculum, graded the FRQs, and seen what trips students up year after year.
This is the work where teaching experience matters most. A high school junior preparing for the AP Calculus BC exam doesn't need a college student who got a 5 four years ago. They need someone who has stood in front of a classroom of twenty AP students, watched where the wheels come off, and knows the three or four conceptual moves that unstick most kids. That's the bar.
You'll meet with students in their homes, online, or at our Livingston, NJ office. We match families to tutors based on your preferred travel radius - you tell us how far you're willing to drive, and we work within that.
Subjects in demand
We have ongoing demand across the AP and CP catalog. The highest-volume requests are typically:
  • Math: Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, Calculus (AB and BC), Statistics (AP and CP)
  • Science: Biology, Chemistry, Physics (1, 2, and C), Environmental Science
  • English: AP Language, AP Literature, college essay coaching
  • Social Studies: US History (APUSH), World History, Government, Psychology
  • Test prep: SAT, ACT, and AP exam preparation

You don't need to cover all of these - most of our tutors specialize in one or two subjects they know deeply.
Responsibilities
  • Deliver one-on-one tutoring sessions in your area(s) of expertise, calibrated to the specific course the student is taking and the specific teacher they're taking it with.
  • Diagnose where the student actually is - not where the grade or the parent says they are - and build sessions around closing the gap.
  • Prepare students for in-class assessments, AP exams, and standardized tests, with a clear sense of what each one actually measures and how to study for it.
  • Coordinate with parents on goals and progress, and with classroom teachers when invited, so tutoring reinforces what's happening at school.
  • Track progress across sessions and adjust pacing, materials, and strategies based on what's working.
  • Submit a short session note after each tutoring session so families and our Director know what was covered and what's next.
Coverage area
We serve families across northern New Jersey, with most in-home sessions concentrated in Essex, Morris, Union, and Bergen counties. When you join, you'll let us know your preferred travel radius from home, and we'll match you with students within that range. Online sessions are available statewide.
Requirements
  • Valid high school teaching certification in your subject area - New Jersey, or equivalent certification from another state with NJ reciprocity. Current and recently-retired classroom teachers strongly preferred.
  • Classroom teaching experience with AP and/or CP-level courses in your subject area. We're looking for teachers who have taught the curriculum, not just learned it.
  • Familiarity with the relevant exam structures - AP exam format, SAT/ACT sections, and how to prepare students for each.
  • Strong communication skills with both teenagers and parents. High school tutoring often involves managing student anxiety and parent expectations in equal measure.
  • Ability to adapt in real time when a planned approach isn't landing - high school students will tell you (sometimes politely, sometimes not) when something isn't working.
  • Availability for after-school, evening, or weekend hours during the school year, with some flexibility during the summer (which is peak season for SAT/ACT prep and pre-AP preparation).
  • Comfort with educational technology - Zoom or Google Meet for online sessions, plus tools for sharing problem sets and tracking progress.
  • Reliable transportation for in-home sessions.
Nice to have
  • AP exam reading experience (current or former AP Reader for the College Board)
  • Department chair, AP coordinator, or curriculum leadership experience
  • Experience teaching in Livingston, Millburn, West Orange, South Orange/Maplewood, or other Essex County high schools
  • College admissions or college essay coaching background
  • Multiple subject areas - e.g., a math teacher who can also tutor physics, or an English teacher comfortable with both AP Lang and AP Lit
  • Bilingual (Spanish, Mandarin, or other languages common in the communities we serve)

Benefits
Compensation & employment status
  • Pay range: $40-$50/hour, based on certification, experience, and subject area. AP-level subjects and SAT/ACT prep specialists typically fall at the upper end of this range.
  • W-2 (default): Most part-time tutors join as W-2 employees. Teacher Tutors handles payroll, taxes, and carries professional liability insurance covering W-2 tutors during scheduled sessions.
  • 1099 (optional): Tutors who prefer 1099 contractor status are welcome, provided they carry their own professional liability insurance and operate through a registered LLC. Documentation will be requested during onboarding.
