About New York Junior Tennis & Learning:

For over fifty years, New York Junior Tennis & Learning (NYJTL) has honored its founder Arthur Ashe’s legacy by celebrating the diversity of children, encouraging them to reach their highest potential through free tennis and academic programs. NYJTL is the largest provider of youth tennis and education programs in the nation, providing services in 100 unique sites across all five boroughs while reaching nearly 90,000 kids. In addition, NYJTL designed, funded (with NYC), built and operates the Cary Leeds Center for Tennis & Learning in the South Bronx. All NYJTL community tennis and after school programs are offered at no cost to its participants.

The mission of NYJTL is to develop the character of young people through tennis and education for a lifetime of success on and off the court. It believes life skills gained through tennis, academics, healthy living, and character development are a catalyst for long-term achievement.

Position Summary:

The Tutor supports participants’ academic success by providing homework help, small-group instruction, and targeted academic support during DYCD-funded after-school hours. The Tutor works under the guidance of the Education Specialist and Program Director to reinforce school-day learning, promote positive study habits, and create a safe, supportive environment for all youth.

Key Responsibilities:

Academic Support & Instruction

  • Provide individual and small-group tutoring in core subject areas (e.g., ELA, math, science, social studies) aligned with school-day curriculum.
  • Support participants with homework completion, projects, test preparation, and skill-building activities.
  • Use clear explanations, modeling, examples, and guided practice to help students understand concepts.
  • Differentiate support based on students’ grade levels, learning styles, language needs, and IEP/504 accommodations (as shared by program staff).

Youth Engagement & Classroom Management

  • Build positive, respectful relationships with youth and maintain a welcoming, inclusive learning environment.
  • Implement program behavior expectations, using positive reinforcement and de-escalation strategies when needed.
  • Encourage student independence, persistence, and problem-solving rather than doing work for them.
  • Promote social-emotional skills such as self-management, goal setting, and collaboration.

Communication & Collaboration

  • Communicate regularly with the Education Specialist, Activity Specialists, and Group Leaders about students’ progress, challenges, and needs.
  • Coordinate with school-day teachers or counselors when requested by the Program Director/Education Specialist.
  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and planning sessions as required.
  • Share feedback and ideas for improving academic support activities and materials.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Accurately record attendance and participation in tutoring sessions as required by DYCD and agency procedures.
  • Follow all program policies related to youth safety, confidentiality, and mandated reporting.
  • Support completion of simple assessments, surveys, and other tools used to measure student progress and program effectiveness.
  • Ensure workspaces are organized, safe, and ready for use each day (materials, supplies, devices, etc.).

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Child Development, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working with elementary or middle school-aged youth.
  • Teaching or tutoring experience.
  • Skills in Math and English.
  • Experience with test preparation and standardized testing.
  • Strong group management, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Interest and experience in youth development.
  • Ability to create interactive, age-appropriate academic and/or enrichment activities in the relevant discipline.
  • Ability and willingness to participate in professional development and training opportunities.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team within a school community.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with school staff, parents, and other stakeholders.

Preferred:

  •  Experience with i-Ready.
  • Experience or knowledge in ESL and literacy instruction.
  • Multilingual or bilingual skills are a plus.
