What is a kicker?

A Kicker is a specialized player in American football responsible for kicking field goals, extra points, and kickoffs. Their primary role is to score points by successfully kicking the ball through the uprights and to help control field position with strategic kickoffs. Kickers must have strong leg power, accuracy, and the ability to perform under pressure. They often practice separately from other positions and may have a longer playing career due to the lower physical demands compared to other football positions.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a kicker?

To excel as a Kicker, you need exceptional leg strength, accuracy, and consistency, typically developed through years of competitive football experience and specialized training. Familiarity with video analysis tools and strength-conditioning programs is common, though specific certifications are not usually required. Strong mental focus, resilience under pressure, and effective communication with coaches and special teams are standout soft skills. These abilities are essential to perform reliably in high-stakes moments and contribute to the overall success of the team.

What does a kicker do?

A typical week for a professional football Kicker involves participating in team practices, attending meetings with the special teams unit, and dedicating significant time to individual drills focusing on technique and accuracy. Kickers also review game footage to analyze their own performance and study upcoming opponents’ tendencies. During game weeks, they collaborate closely with holders, long snappers, and coaches to ensure timing and coordination are precise. Maintaining physical and mental conditioning is a top priority throughout the season to stay prepared for high-pressure moments during games.
