Job Description
A Fleet Detailer is responsible for performing routine cleaning and light detailing of the interior and exterior of Ketchikan Gateway Borough Transit vehicles. This entry-level position focuses on maintaining a clean, safe, and presentable fleet for public use.
Examples of Duties
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Operates bus wash system, vacuums, and other janitorial equipment using proper procedures to avoid equipment or vehicle damage.
  • Cleans interior surfaces of buses including windows, seats, handrails, and floors; tasks include sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, scrubbing, and trash removal.
  • Sanitizes high-touch areas and addresses graffiti, biohazards, and other special cleaning needs in accordance with health and safety protocols.
  • Maintains an orderly and safe work environment; adheres to OSHA guidelines and Borough safety practices.
  • Tracks janitorial supply usage and supports restocking efforts through digital or manual inventory systems.
  • Uses computer software or mobile devices to record work activities, cleaning checklists, and condition reports.
  • Participates in required training sessions related to cleaning protocols, safety, or operational tools.
Additional Responsibilities:
  • May assist in orienting or training peers on cleaning procedures and safety practices.
  • Reports observed vehicle damage, maintenance issues, or irregularities to a supervisor or designated staff member.
  • Performs related tasks as assigned to support general transit facility cleanliness and appearance.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES INCLUDE: (with or without reasonable accommodation)
This position requires the ability to:
  • Hear and see clearly (including close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment).
  • Use hands to operate cleaning tools and controls; reach overhead or under seats.
  • Stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb ladders or stools, and lift/carry supplies weighing up to 50 lbs and will be trained in proper lifting technique.
  • Work in varying weather conditions and environments including garages and bus lots.

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Basic knowledge of janitorial practices, cleaning agents, and safety procedures.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Comfortable using basic computer systems, tablets, or mobile apps for inventory and task tracking.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Commitment to maintaining a professional and courteous demeanor with coworkers and the public.
  • Willingness to participate in ongoing training relevant to job duties.

Requirements
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:
  • A valid State of Alaska driver's license is preferred but not required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Experience in custodial work, vehicle detailing, or commercial cleaning is helpful but not required.
  • On-the-job training will be provided.
