As of Aug 17, 2026, the average yearly pay for kernel in Oregon is $155,060.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $129,663.00 and $169,060.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a kernel engineer?

Kernel Engineers typically spend their days designing, implementing, and maintaining low-level components of an operating system’s kernel, such as device drivers, process schedulers, or memory management subsystems. They often review and refactor code, troubleshoot and resolve bugs, and collaborate closely with hardware engineers, application developers, and QA teams. Participation in code reviews and contributing to open source communities or internal repositories are also common activities. This role requires staying up to date with the latest kernel developments and ensuring code changes are performant and stable, directly impacting the reliability and efficiency of the broader system.

What is a kernel?

A Kernel job typically refers to a role focused on developing, maintaining, or optimizing an operating system's kernel—the core component that manages system resources, hardware interaction, and process scheduling. Kernel developers work with low-level programming languages like C and Assembly to improve system performance, security, and stability. These roles often involve debugging kernel crashes, implementing new features, and collaborating with hardware and software teams to ensure seamless integration.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the kernel position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Kernel Engineer, you need strong expertise in operating system fundamentals, C/C++ programming, and kernel module development, often supported by a degree in computer science or equivalent experience. Familiarity with Linux kernel source code, debugging tools like GDB, and version control systems such as Git is essential. Analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and effective communication distinguish outstanding professionals in this field. These skills are crucial for maintaining system stability, ensuring high performance, and collaborating on complex, low-level software projects.

Job description

We are seeking a highly-skilled RHEL Engineer to provide technical expertise and advisory services supporting a leading financial services customer with automating the OS security and patching processes to more efficiently and frequently execute vulnerability remediations and upgrades.
In this role, you will lead the strategy and execution of identifying, designing, and automating CI/CD components to accelerate patching and upgrade timelines. You will act as the technical lead, bridging the gap between current state architecture and a modern, automated upgrade workflow.
This role requires a background check, fingerprinting, and onboarding process which typically takes 4-6 weeks. The start date (tentatively September 1st) is dependent on completion of these requirements. Candidate must also be willing to sign financial disclosure forms with the Customer.
Responsibilities

  • Strategy & Architecture Design
    • Conduct solutions design sessions to identify current upgrade pain points
    • Assist the Customer with identifying automation opportunities and designing and documenting future state patching / upgrade processes
  • Automation & Execution
    • Develop automation to improve the speed and reliability of certification and distribution of kernel/OS config snapshots
    • Investigating Kpatch and identifying opportunities to use it as an even faster route to deploy in some scenarios
    • Develop and refine automation playbooks for snapshot, upgrade, rollback, and patching commit tasks
    • Execute the patching / upgrade workflow and troubleshoot alongside Engineering teams
    • Refine automation processes to support diverse system types across the infrastructure
  • Validation & Documentation
    • Create and maintain a standard RHEL patching / upgrade workflow (pre-analysis, remediation, snapshot, validation, rollback, and commit)
    • Build a knowledge-base for the in-place upgrade process for internal release
  • Technical Oversight & Facilitation
    • Facilitate workshops to fill technical knowledge gaps and capture upgrade dependencies
    • Identify beta users and test/validate the upgrade process at scale
    • Provide weekly status reports to the Project Manager to ensure transparency on project status, risks, and decision-making

Requirements

  • US Citizenship
  • Proven 10+ years of experience with RHEL deployments, hardening, and operations
  • Proven understanding of CI/CD pipelines and engagement experience with automating processes to accelerate deployment timelines
  • Strong proficiency in Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform (AAP) and building automation workflows
  • Understanding of Kpatch and applicable use cases
  • Strong proficiency in Python
  • Ability to facilitate technical workshops and lead architectural decision-making
  • Experience in creating technical documentation and knowledge-base assets
  • Strong troubleshooting capabilities, including coordination with vendor engineering teams
  • Experience in managing technical scope and communicating progress to executive stakeholders
