What is a kennel helper?

Kennel helpers are support staff who assist in the daily care and maintenance of animals housed in kennels, shelters, or boarding facilities. Their responsibilities typically include feeding, exercising, cleaning cages, monitoring animal health, and providing basic grooming. Kennel helpers play a vital role in ensuring animals are comfortable, safe, and well-cared for while staying at the facility. They may also help with record-keeping and interacting with pet owners as needed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a kennel helper?

To thrive as a Kennel Helper, you need basic animal care knowledge, physical stamina, and attention to cleanliness, typically with a high school diploma or equivalent. If you love working with animals and want to be part of a veterinary hospital where your work directly impacts the comfort and care of every patient, this could be the opportunity for you.
Whether your background is in kennel care, boarding, animal care, dog daycare, veterinary assisting, or pet care, we want to meet you.
At Animal Hospital at Lakewood Ranch, our Kennel Technicians are an important part of the veterinary team. You'll help care for hospitalized and boarding pets, maintain a clean and welcoming hospital, and support the doctors, veterinary technicians, and client service team throughout the day.
You won't just care for pets here. You'll become part of a team that cares about them, and each other.
Starting at $16.00 per hour, negotiable based on experience
Consistent Full-Time Schedule:
A predictable full-time schedule gives you the stability to build relationships with your teammates, patients, and clients while becoming an integral part of the hospital.
As a Kennel Technician, you will help ensure our patients receive exceptional care while maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment.
What You'll Do
Patient and Boarding Care
  • Feed, walk, exercise, and monitor boarding and hospitalized pets
  • Provide compassionate daily care for dogs and cats
  • Administer medications as directed by the veterinary team
  • Monitor patient behavior, appetite, comfort, and overall condition

  • Help maintain a comfortable and welcoming environment for patients and their families
Be Part of the Team
  • Support veterinarians and veterinary technicians with patient care and animal handling
  • Assist with patient restraint when appropriate
  • Work closely with the client service team and other hospital departments
  • Help keep patient care and daily hospital operations running smoothly
  • Step in where needed and contribute to a positive team environment
We're looking for someone who is dependable, hardworking, compassionate, and ready to be part of a team.
What We're Looking For
  • 1+ year of experience in animal care, boarding, kennel operations, veterinary medicine, or a related field preferred
  • Comfort handling dogs and cats of different sizes, breeds, and temperaments
  • A strong work ethic and attention to detail
  • The ability to work efficiently in a busy veterinary environment
  • A positive, team-oriented attitude
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality
  • A genuine passion for caring for animals
Veterinary experience is helpful, but we're equally interested in people who bring the right attitude, work ethic, and desire to learn.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds with or without assistance
  • Frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, and reach throughout the workday
  • Comfortable working around animal dander, cleaning products, veterinary chemicals, and varying noise levels
  • Ability to safely handle and restrain animals when necessary
Why Join Us?
We're building a team-not simply filling positions.
As a Kennel Technician at Animal Hospital at Lakewood Ranch, you'll work alongside veterinary professionals who understand that excellent patient care starts with the people providing it. You'll gain hands-on experience in a veterinary hospital while learning how patient care, nursing, boarding, and hospital operations come together.
For team members who want to grow, this can be a starting point for a long-term career in veterinary medicine.
Opportunities may include growth into roles such as:
