What is a Kaiser Operating Room nurse?

Kaiser Operating Room Nurses, also known as perioperative nurses or scrub nurses, are registered nurses who work in the surgical departments of Kaiser Permanente hospitals. They are responsible for preparing the operating room, assisting surgeons during procedures, and ensuring patient safety before, during, and after surgery. These nurses collaborate closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and surgical technologists to provide high-quality care for patients undergoing operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Kaiser Operating Room nurse?

To thrive as a Kaiser Operating Room Nurse, you need strong perioperative nursing knowledge, critical thinking, and current RN licensure, often with a BSN and Basic Life Support (BLS) or Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification. Familiarity with surgical instruments, sterile technique, electronic medical records, and systems like Epic is typically required. Attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication are vital soft skills for ensuring patient safety and smooth surgical procedures. These skills and certifications are crucial for delivering safe, efficient care and collaborating within a high-stakes surgical environment.

How does a Kaiser Operating Room nurse typically collaborate with surgeons and surgical teams during procedures?

As an Operating Room Nurse at Kaiser, you play a pivotal role in surgical procedures by working closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and surgical technologists. Collaboration involves anticipating the needs of the surgical team, ensuring all instruments and supplies are prepared and sterile, and maintaining a safe environment for the patient. You will also communicate effectively to coordinate tasks such as patient positioning, instrument counts, and documentation. This teamwork is essential for patient safety and successful outcomes, and strong interpersonal skills are highly valued.
