Juris Doctorate information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a juris doctor (JD), and why are they important?

A Juris Doctorate (JD) is a professional graduate degree in law, primarily awarded in the United States. Earning a JD is the standard educational requirement to sit for the bar exam and become a licensed attorney. The program typically takes three years of full-time study and covers subjects such as constitutional law, contracts, civil procedure, and ethics. Graduates of a JD program can pursue various legal careers, including practicing law, working in government, or entering academia.

What jobs require a juris doctorate?

The Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree is the primary degree for the legal profession for those who want to practice as an attorney. However, it does not limit you to working as a lawyer. Other positions for a Juris Doctor include roles in education, research, document review, and other fields that require legal consult. Most people with this degree spend at least some time as an attorney to prepare for other jobs, but it is possible to find work with a J.D. while never acting as an attorney. You can also go on to earn a Doctor of Juridical Science degree, which is the terminal doctoral degree in the legal profession. This degree is what most colleges require if you want to teach law.

What can I do with a juris doctorate degree?

A Juris Doctorate (JD) degree qualifies individuals to practice law as attorneys, work in legal consulting, or pursue roles in government, corporate compliance, or legal research. It often requires passing the bar exam and developing skills in critical thinking, negotiation, and legal analysis.
