Description & Requirements

Junior Project Engineer

Location: Montreal

Type: Permanent Full-time

Primero America's team is currently looking for a Junior Project Engineer.

This is a unique opportunity to join our talented team and be part of Primero's growth and success. Primero is an Australian-founded company, established in 2011 and growing consistently in Montreal since 2016. We expanded into Houston in 2022 and Toronto in 2023, strengthening our North American presence. We specialize in the design, procurement, and construction management of mineral processing plants.

The Junior Project Engineer will play a key role in supporting the successful execution of mining and heavy industrial projects across all project phases, from engineering and procurement through construction and commissioning. This role reports directly to the Engineering Manager.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary project team, the successful candidate will support project coordination, contractor management, technical problem-solving, and site execution activities while ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and within schedule and budget requirements.

This role is ideal for a hands-on and adaptable engineer who enjoys balancing technical engineering responsibilities with project coordination and field execution in a fast-paced EPCM environment. The position may involve site activities depending on project requirements.

At Primero, we value efficiency, accountability, and integrity - and we take pride in delivering high-quality work in a collaborative and down-to-earth environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the day-to-day coordination of project teams, subcontractors, and vendors throughout engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning activities
  • Participate in project coordination meetings with internal teams, contractors, vendors, and clients
  • Read and interpret specifications, technical drawings, schematics, and engineering documentation
  • Perform engineering calculations and provide technical support for site modifications, lift studies, and general field problem-solving activities
  • Support the application and interpretation of applicable Canadian and/or U.S. engineering codes and standards
  • Assist in monitoring project schedules, contractor progress, costs, and scope changes throughout project execution
  • Provide technical coordination, quality oversight, and support during construction and commissioning activities
  • Review contractor quality documentation and support project quality assurance activities
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams to support project delivery objectives and technical requirements
  • Communicate design or scope changes that may impact schedules, budgets, or project deliverables
  • Support vendor and subcontractor coordination during supply, construction, and commissioning phases
  • Contribute to project planning, execution, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with clients, contractors, and project stakeholders
  • Support site activities including installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and field coordination as required
  • Contribute to a safe, collaborative, and high-performing work environment

Qualifications, skills, abilities and experience we are looking for:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related discipline
  • Member of the Ordre des Ingenieurs du Quebec (OIQ), CPI (Candidate to the Engineering Profession), or in the process of obtaining professional engineering licensure in Quebec; active OIQ membership is considered an asset.
  • 1 to 3 years of experience in a similar role within the mineral processing, mining, or heavy industrial sectors
  • Experience supporting construction and commissioning activities in industrial or mining environments, including onsite exposure
  • Strong understanding of project execution, contractor coordination, and multidisciplinary project environments
  • Experience reading and interpreting engineering drawings, schematics, specifications, and technical documentation
  • Solid understanding of applicable engineering standards, codes, and regulations
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to resolve technical and site-related challenges
  • Experience monitoring contractor activities, project schedules, costs, and scope changes
  • Excellent communication and coordination skills (oral and written)
  • Humble, collaborative, and open to feedback, with a team-first mindset
  • Comfortable working in a collaborative environment where technical discussions and team exchanges are part of day-to-day work
  • Proactive and solutions-oriented, with the ability to adapt to changing priorities and project demands
  • Well organized, detail-oriented, and focused on delivering high-quality work
  • Comfortable working in fast-paced project environments with multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Accountable and results-driven, with a strong sense of ownership over your work
  • Able to deliver quality work within project schedules and budgets
  • Committed to safety and promoting a strong HSE culture on projects and sites

Assets:

  • Experience within an EPCM environment
  • Exposure to mineral processing plants, bulk materials handling, or heavy industrial facilities
  • Experience coordinating contractors and vendors during construction and commissioning activities
  • Further training or exposure to project management and/or contract management
  • Familiarity with project scheduling tools such as Primavera or MS Project
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, plant design software, or 3D model navigation tools

What Primero offers:

  • 40 hours per week
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in Canada
  • Competitive salary based on experience and qualifications
  • Comprehensive benefits coverage from day one
  • Retirement plan with employer contribution up to 5%
  • Up to 10 paid sick days per year
  • Casual dress code
  • Flexible hybrid work schedule
  • Office located in the heart of downtown Montreal
