Job description

About Us

We are a global climate technologies company engineered for sustainability. We create sustainable and efficient residential, commercial and industrial spaces through HVACR technologies. We protect temperature-sensitive goods throughout the cold chain. And we bring comfort to people globally. Best-in-class engineering, design and manufacturing combined with category-leading brands in compression, controls, software and monitoring solutions result in next-generation climate technology that is built for the needs of the world ahead.

Whether you are a professional looking for a career change, an undergraduate student exploring your first opportunity, or recent graduate with an advanced degree, we have opportunities that will allow you to innovate, be challenged and make an impact. Join our team and start your journey today!

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced and hands-on Senior Firmware Engineer to lead the design, development, and optimization of low-power, connected firmware for our next-generation IoT devices. In this role, you will architect secure, scalable, and resilient embedded software that bridges edge hardware with cloud infrastructure.

You will work closely with hardware engineers, systems architects, and cloud teams from initial board bring-up through volume manufacturing and field deployment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Firmware Architecture & Development: Design, code, and maintain production-grade C/C++ firmware for resource-constrained microcontrollers (ARM Cortex-M, ESP32, RISC-V, etc.).
  • IoT Connectivity & Protocols: Implement and optimize low-power wireless communication stacks, including Wi-Fi, BLE, Cellular (LTE-M/NB-IoT), Thread/Zigbee, and application protocols such as MQTT, CoAP, and HTTP/HTTPS.
  • Hardware Bring-Up & Driver Development: Write low-level device drivers for peripherals (I2C, SPI, UART, ADC, PWM, DMA, flash memory) and collaborate with hardware teams during board bring-up and debugging.
  • Power Optimization: Analyze and implement aggressive power management strategies (sleep modes, duty cycling, peripheral management) to maximize battery longevity for edge devices.
  • Security & OTA Updates: Implement hardware-root-of-trust security features (secure boot, TLS, cryptographic acceleration, key management) and robust over-the-air (OTA) firmware update mechanisms.
  • System Integration & Testing: Utilize RTOS platforms (FreeRTOS, Zephyr, or embedded Linux) to write multithreaded applications; conduct hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing and automated regression testing.
  • Lifecycle & Manufacturing Support: Support factory test fixture development, diagnostic firmware creation, and mass production testing protocols.
  • Mentorship & Process: Drive code reviews, enforce coding standards (e.g., MISRA C), write technical documentation, and mentor junior and mid-level firmware engineers.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience: 5+ years of professional experience developing embedded C/C++ firmware for commercial IoT or edge devices.
  • RTOS Expertise: Proven experience using real-time operating systems (FreeRTOS, Zephyr, ThreadX, or similar) for multi-tasking architectures.
  • Protocol Proficiency: Hands-on experience with wireless technologies (Wi-Fi, BLE, Cellular IoT, LoRaWAN) and network security standards (mTLS, AES, RSA, ECC).
  • Hardware Debugging: Proficient with hardware lab equipment, including oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, digital multimeters, JTAG/SWD debuggers, and power profilers.
  • Tooling & Version Control: Advanced proficiency with Git, CMake/Make, GCC, CI/CD pipelines for embedded builds, and static analysis tools.

Preferred / Nice-to-Have Skills

  • Experience with Zephyr RTOS and modern meta-build systems (West/CMake).
  • Exposure to embedded security architectures (ARM TrustZone, Secure Elements/TPMs).
  • Familiarity with Python for test automation and scripting.
  • Prior experience delivering high-volume consumer electronics or industrial IoT products from concept to mass production.
