What is a junior site reliability engineer?

A Junior Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) is an entry-level role focused on maintaining the reliability, performance, and scalability of software systems. They assist in monitoring system health, automating processes, and troubleshooting incidents. Junior SREs work closely with development and operations teams to improve infrastructure efficiency and deployment workflows. They typically have a background in programming, cloud technologies, and system administration. This role serves as a stepping stone to more senior SRE positions by developing expertise in site reliability best practices.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a junior site reliability engineer?

As a Junior Site Reliability Engineer, your daily tasks often include monitoring system performance, responding to alerts, assisting with incident investigations, and collaborating with senior team members to resolve issues. You may also help write scripts to automate repetitive tasks, update documentation, and participate in team meetings to discuss ongoing projects or outages. Over time, you’ll gain experience with deployment pipelines, configuration management, and infrastructure-as-code practices. This hands-on involvement provides valuable exposure to real-world infrastructure challenges and helps you build a strong technical foundation for future growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior site reliability engineer?

To thrive as a Junior Site Reliability Engineer, you need a solid understanding of systems administration, Linux fundamentals, networking concepts, and basic programming or scripting skills, usually supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with monitoring tools (like Prometheus or Datadog), cloud platforms (such as AWS or GCP), and version control systems (like Git) is commonly expected, with certifications like AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner considered a plus. Problem-solving aptitude, a willingness to learn, and effective communication skills help you collaborate across teams and adapt to changing technical environments. These competencies are vital to ensuring system reliability, incident response efficiency, and smooth operations within increasingly complex infrastructure landscapes.

How much do junior site reliability engineers make?

Junior site reliability engineers typically earn between $60,000 and $90,000 annually, depending on location, company size, and experience. Entry-level roles often require knowledge of scripting, monitoring tools, and cloud platforms, which can influence salary levels.

Job description

Role Summary
In this role, you will drive end-to-end reliability for our Solid-State Transformer (SST) platform, from concept to field deployment. You will lead cross-functional teams to mitigate program risks via Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA)/Fault Tree analysis (FTA) and set clear reliability benchmarks for supplier selection. By developing advanced Physics-of-failure (PoF) modeling and performing expert-level RCA, you will ensure our hardware meets the demanding lifetime required for modern energy infrastructure.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the setup and execution of reliability test plans for SST's (solid state transformer), including thermal mapping and accelerated life testing.
  • Utilize statistical methods to analyze test data, identifying trends in component or system-level failures.
  • Participate in DFMEA sessions, helping to document risks and track mitigation actions.
  • Perform initial root-cause analysis on failed components using lab equipment (microscopes, X-ray, etc.) and coordinate with senior engineers on complex investigations.
  • Assist in building reliability block diagrams and basic PoF models to predict product lifetime.
  • Work closely with the Design and Manufacturing teams to communicate test results and ensure reliability targets are met.
  • Maintain detailed records of test procedures, lab results, and reliability reports for key milestones.
  • Ability to travel occasionally to different facilities to support hardware deployment and testing.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Reliability Engineering.
  • Strong understanding of hardware reliability or circuit analysis.
  • Basic familiarity with reliability statistics (Weibull distribution, MTBF) and a desire to master advanced Bayesian and Monte Carlo methods.
  • Comfortable working in a high-voltage lab environment; experience with basic diagnostic tools (Oscilloscopes, Multimeters).
  • Interest in learning reliability tools such as ReliaSoft (Weibull++, ALTA) or simulation software like Ansys Sherlock.
  • Nice to have proficiency in Python, MATLAB, or R for data processing and automation.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills; ability to translate complex data into clear, actionable updates for the team.
  • A "first principles" thinker who is eager to learn and thrives in a fast-paced hardware startup environment.

Please note:This role requires working on-site 5 days a week. We do not offer hybrid or remote options.Â
