Job description

Overview

Senior Software Engineer position responsible for the design, development, analysis, testing, and implementation of software operating or application systems. Communicates project information to clients, project managers, and other design personnel; maintains strong relationships with clients and staff; writes and maintains documentation; supports team members; and ensures goals and deadlines are met. This role may require up to 20% travel.

Responsibilities
  • Act as an expert in assigned areas of software engineering and mentor junior engineers to improve effectiveness.
  • Maintain accountability for quality of services and success of projects in scope, on time and on budget.
  • Contribute as a lead or consultant for at least one team; serve as a go-to person in a sub-discipline or application area.
  • Mentor team members through formal and informal guidance during meetings and problem solving; communicate effectively with other disciplines to identify and resolve problems.
  • Lead teams or cross-functional groups in knowledge transfer through formal or informal means (presentations, white papers, etc.).
  • Act as a planning consultant to identify technical risks and dependencies; anticipate problems and mentor others in risk management.
  • Provide authoritative answers related to ownership of the platform; contribute to rapid identification of system problems and minimize time to restoration of services.
  • Assist engineering management in identifying opportunities for improvement, including training and addressing emerging problems.
  • Plan and execute testing strategies to maximize quality while minimizing costs; balance quality and time-to-implement considerations.
  • Translate functional, non-functional, and implied requirements into designs and code that meet specifications; identify gaps and propose solutions.
  • Guide junior engineers on requirements delivery and collaboration with Operations to solve system-level problems.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
  • Understanding of software development processes (Planning, Measurement, Coding, Testing, Reuse, Tools, Abstraction, Algorithms and Complexity, Security, basic system understanding).
  • Ability to employ engineering tools and techniques (database management, UI development, inter-process communication, etc.).
  • Ability to design code that meets functional and non-functional requirements; use design patterns and secure, fault-tolerant designs.
  • Experience with multiple design methodologies (Object-Oriented, Function-Oriented, data-centered) and various SDLC models; understanding of Software as a Service implications.
  • Ability to design for scale, reliability, and cost in a cloud environment; use data and metrics to analyze KPIs.
  • Ability to explain system value to users and how subsystems interoperate; partner with Operations to solve problems at the system level.
  • Strong communication skills; ability to present solutions, manage expectations, and engage stakeholders appropriately.
  • Ability to identify, mitigate, or avoid risks and coordinate with leads or managers on risk management strategies.
  • Understanding of the higher education landscape, including online education, competitive landscape, opportunities, and feature gaps; identify innovative ideas or technologies to advance the platform.
  • Ability to drive adoption through change management processes; foster team cohesion and effectiveness.
Qualifications
  • Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field; 6 years of software development experience; experience with web-based applications and web services using Java, REST, ServiceNow, and related technologies; experience interfacing with databases and integrating third-party products with existing infrastructure. Equivalent relevant experience may substitute for education requirements (1 year of experience per 1 year of education).
  • Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree or PhD in Computer Science or related field; experience with IntelliJ/VS Code, JIRA, Git; Agile/Scrum project development; IDM/OSSO, Hibernate/Seam, Banner; application integration with legacy systems; cloud-native development or porting/refactoring to cloud (AWS preferred); J2EE/Java EE/JavaScript/SQL.
