Job description

Position Summary:

As a Senior Software Engineer on the Application Development Team within Information Technology, you will play a key role in designing, building, and operating modern, cloud‑native applications that support a broad portfolio of systems used by both NAR staff and the membership. This is a hands‑on senior individual‑contributor role with ownership of architecture and implementation decisions for assigned solutions, within established enterprise standards, with mentoring opportunities but without people-management responsibilities.

You will work across front‑end and back‑end systems, deploying scalable solutions on Microsoft Azure and partnering closely with product, data, security, and compliance teams. Success in this role means delivering reliable, secure, and well‑architected systems across multiple applications, modernizing existing platforms, and taking ownership of the systems you build and support.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design, build, deploy, and operate cloud‑native applications on Microsoft Azure, following modern architectural and security best practices.

  • Develop and enhance full‑stack web applications across a variety of internal and member‑facing systems using technologies such as Next.js, Nuxt.js, React.js, Angular, .NET, Java, and Node.js.

  • Build and maintain backend services and RESTful APIs using C#/.NET and Java, supporting integrations with internal platforms and third‑party vendors.

  • Design, optimize, and maintain relational and non‑relational databases, with strong hands‑on experience in Azure SQL and other data stores.

  • Own applications end‑to‑end, including production support, monitoring, troubleshooting, performance optimization, and cost efficiency in Azure.

  • Implement and maintain CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps, ensuring high‑quality releases through automated testing and disciplined code review practices.

  • Collaborate with security and compliance partners to ensure applications meet organizational policies and regulatory requirements.

  • Apply AI-assisted tools across software development, testing, documentation, and engineering workflows to enhance team productivity, quality, and delivery efficiency, while ensuring solutions remain maintainable, secure, and well governed.

  • Provide technical leadership in Agile/Scrum ceremonies, including technical planning, estimation, and delivery commitments.

  • Create and maintain clear technical documentation for applications, APIs, and system integrations.

  • Stay current with emerging technologies, cloud services, and industry trends, recommending improvements as appropriate.

  • Other duties, as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).

  • 5+ years of professional experience delivering and supporting production‑grade software solutions.

  • Strong hands‑on experience with full‑stack development, including:
        - Front‑end: Next.js / Nuxt.js, React.js, Angular
        - Back‑end: C#/.NET, Java, Node.js

  • Must‑have database experience, including designing, querying, and optimizing Azure SQL, with working knowledge of NoSQL databases.

  • Proven experience building and maintaining RESTful APIs and integrating distributed systems.

  • Solid experience deploying and operating applications on Microsoft Azure.

  • Practical experience with Azure DevOps for source control, CI/CD pipelines, and work item tracking.

  • Exposure to and practical use of AI coding tools (such as copilots or code assistants) in a professional development environment.

  • Strong understanding of software architecture, scalability, security best practices, and the full software development lifecycle.

  • Ability to work independently, make sound technical decisions, and take ownership of complex technical implementations.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting or integrating with Microsoft Power Platform solutions, including Power Apps and Power Automate.

  • Experience integrating authentication and authorization solutions such as Auth0, including familiarity with OAuth/OIDC‑based SSO patterns.

  • Familiarity with Azure‑based reporting or analytics integrations (for example, Power BI).

  • Experience modernizing legacy applications or contributing to large‑scale platform migrations.

What success looks like in this role:

  • You reliably deliver high‑quality, scalable, and secure applications that support both staff and member‑facing systems.

  • You take strong ownership of the applications and services you are responsible for in production.

  • You effectively use AI‑assisted development tools to improve speed and quality without sacrificing maintainability.

  • You are a trusted senior technical contributor who partners well with cross‑functional teams to deliver business value.

Compensation: $145,000-$165,000
