Junior Fullstack Developer information

What is a Junior Fullstack Developer?

A Junior Fullstack Developer is an entry-level software developer who works on both the front-end and back-end components of web applications. They typically have foundational knowledge of programming languages and frameworks such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and at least one back-end language like Node.js, Python, or Java. Their responsibilities may include building user interfaces, connecting to databases, and collaborating with other developers to deliver functional software solutions. As juniors, they usually work under the supervision of more experienced developers while they gain more skills and experience.

What are some common challenges faced by Junior Fullstack Developers when working on cross-functional teams?

Junior Fullstack Developers often encounter challenges in balancing front-end and back-end tasks, especially when collaborating with more specialized team members. They may need to quickly adapt to different coding standards, tools, and communication styles across departments. Regularly seeking feedback, proactively asking questions, and participating in code reviews can help bridge knowledge gaps and ensure smooth collaboration. Over time, these experiences build both technical proficiency and confidence in contributing to diverse team projects.

What is the difference between Junior Fullstack Developer vs Junior Frontend Developer?

The main difference between a Junior Fullstack Developer and a Junior Frontend Developer is the scope of work. Fullstack developers handle both frontend and backend tasks, while frontend developers focus mainly on user interface and experience. Your choice depends on your interest in working across the entire tech stack or specializing in frontend design.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Junior Fullstack Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior Fullstack Developer, you need a solid understanding of front-end and back-end programming languages (such as JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and a back-end language like Node.js or Python), as well as foundational knowledge of web development principles. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, databases (SQL or NoSQL), and frameworks such as React or Express is typically required, and certifications like freeCodeCamp or coding bootcamps can be beneficial. Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and effective communication help you collaborate with teams and learn quickly in a fast-paced environment. These skills and qualities are crucial for efficiently building, maintaining, and improving web applications while contributing to team objectives.

Job description

Patreon is a media and community platform where over 300,000 creators give their biggest fans access to exclusive work and experiences. We offer creators a variety of ways to engage with their communities and build a lasting business including: paid memberships, free memberships, community chats, live experiences, and selling to fans directly with one-time purchases.
Ultimately our goal is simple: fund the creative class. And we're leaders in that space, with:
  • $10 billion+ generated by creators since Patreon's inception
  • 100 million+ free memberships for fans who may not be ready to pay just yet, and
  • 25 million+ paid memberships on Patreon today.

We're continuing to invest heavily in building the best creator platform with the best team in the creator economy and are looking for a Senior Full Stack Software Engineer to support our mission.
This role is based in New York and open to those who are able to be in-office 2 days per week on a hybrid work model.
About the Team
The Creation team helps creators express their full creativity on Patreon. We build and maintain tools for media and newsletter creation that are distributed across mobile, web and email. We are a New York based, cross-functional product engineering team focused on delivering measurable value to creators.
About the Role
  • Lead development of key products that enhance the experience of Patreon creators
  • Work with a team of engineers to break down and solve complex problems
  • Exemplify and drive adoption of best practices in the areas of system design, performance, and testing
  • Collaborate cross-functionally and cross-team to build products that holistically meet user needs
  • Partner to build and adapt engineering systems and solutions that will accelerate the team's engineering velocity
  • Mentor and guide more junior engineers towards success

About You
  • 5+ years of experience in backend software development
  • In depth knowledge of Python, Go, PHP, Java or a similar general purpose language
  • Strong understanding of web servers, API design frameworks, and data modeling
  • Understanding of performance profiling and best-practices for database query optimization
  • Excellent communication skills to drive requirements gathering, decision-making, and knowledge sharing.
  • Holds a high standard of quality and craft with an eye for product excellence and engineering detail
  • A track record of building systems with attention to detail, high reliability, and high throughput
  • Penchant for solving complex requirements with elegant and simple solutions
  • Enthusiastic about building for creators

We hire talented and passionate people from different backgrounds because workplace diversity and inclusion is critical to our ability to serve creators worldwide. If you're excited about a role but your past experience doesn't match with every bullet point outlined above, we strongly encourage you to apply anyway. If you're a creator at heart, are energized by our mission, and share our company values, we'd love to hear from you.
About Patreon
Patreon powers creators to do what they love and get paid by the people who love what they do. Our team is passionate about making this mission and our core values come to life every day in our work. Through this work, our Patronauts:
  • Put Creators First | They're the reason we're here. When creators win, we win.
  • Build with Craft | We sign our name to every deliverable, just like the creators we serve.
  • Make it Happen | We don't quit. We learn and deliver.
  • Win Together | We grow as individuals. We win as a team.

Patreon is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We provide employment opportunities without regard to age, race, color, ancestry, national origin, religion, disability, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, veteran status, or any other protected class. If you need a reasonable accommodation during the interview process, please let us know via email at accomodations@patreon.
Patreon offers a competitive benefits package including and not limited to salary, equity plans, healthcare, flexible time off, company holidays and recharge days, commuter benefits, lifestyle stipends, learning and development stipends, patronage, parental leave, and 401k plan with matching.
Patreon operates under a hybrid work model, where employees based in office locations are expected to come into the office two days per week, excluding sick time and paid leave. The goal of this policy is to be intentional about the in-person time we spend together to strengthen the feeling of community at Patreon. Candidates outside of our office hubs are not expected to meet the same requirements.
At Patreon, we believe in fair and transparent pay. In compliance with New York and California pay transparency laws, we are sharing the expected salary range for this role.
The posted salary range is dependent on the location and the level. This range may encompass multiple levels within the role's job family. The final offer will be based on candidate's experience, skills, competencies, and geographic location, aligning with the appropriate job level within Patreon's leveling framework. For remote employees located outside CA and NY, salary may vary based on location and local market conditions.
Patreon reserves the right to modify or update compensation and benefits at any time.
