What is a junior full stack engineer?

A Junior Full Stack Engineer is an entry-level software developer who works on both the front-end and back-end of web applications. They are typically responsible for building, testing, and maintaining features across the entire technology stack, often under the supervision of more experienced engineers. Juniors work with languages and frameworks such as JavaScript, HTML, CSS, Node.js, and databases like SQL or MongoDB. While they may not have deep expertise yet, they are expected to learn quickly, collaborate with team members, and gradually take on more complex tasks.

How does a junior full stack engineer typically collaborate with other team members on a project?

As a Junior Full Stack Engineer, you’ll regularly work alongside front-end and back-end developers, designers, and product managers to deliver features and resolve issues. Collaboration often includes participating in daily stand-ups, code reviews, and sprint planning sessions. You’ll be expected to communicate progress and challenges clearly, seek guidance when needed, and contribute to shared code repositories using version control tools like Git. This collaborative environment helps you learn quickly and build strong relationships within a multidisciplinary team.

Director, Full-Stack Engineer

BNY

Boston, MA • On-site

Job description

hackajob is collaborating with BNY to connect them with exceptional professionals for this role.

We’re seeking a future team member for the role of Director, Full Stack Engineer to join our Data and Analytics Solutions team. This role is located in Boston, MA; however, candidates may also be considered for Pittsburgh, PA.

Data and Analytics is a cloud-based software and content offering that builds client-centric data, technology, and content capabilities, combining the expertise of the Data Vault, Eagle product suite, and other BNY technology and data assets. The division extends BNY’s Asset Servicing capabilities in securities and cash into the world’s most important asset class — data. We are investing in people and technology to construct and execute the next generation SaaS, and our engineering teams take ownership of building, delivering, and operating large-scale services in the public cloud. If you are an engineer who is equally comfortable writing application code and building out the infrastructure, tooling, and pipelines that keep systems reliable, agile, and scalable, then we have the right challenge for you.

In this role, you’ll make an impact in the following ways:

  • Design and develop Java and Python microservices as part of an enterprise-scale platform, working closely with architects and engineering leads to ensure services, APIs, and data stores integrate cohesively and scale cost-effectively across global regions.

  • Contribute to the platform’s future architecture by understanding how cross-service dependencies, data flows, and infrastructure components fit together — partnering with architects to evaluate trade-offs around performance, cost, resilience, and global expansion.

  • Provision and manage Azure Cloud infrastructure through Terraform and Infrastructure as Code; collaborate on region-aware provisioning strategies that balance reliability with cost efficiency as the platform extends into new markets.

  • Build, deploy, and operate containerized workloads on Kubernetes, working with platform teams to leverage KEDA for autoscaling, Chainguard for supply-chain security, Artifactory for artifact management, and service mesh (Consul or Istio) for secure service-to-service communication.

  • Design and maintain CI/CD pipelines using GitHub, Jenkins - Groovy (pipeline-as-code), and Harness for continuous delivery — ensuring deployment patterns support multi-region releases with fast, safe, and repeatable promotion.

  • Collaborate on platform-wide monitoring, alerting, and metrics-driven automation using New Relic; participate in Root Cause Analysis and contribute architectural improvements to prevent recurrence and ensure reliability at scale.

  • Work across Snowflake and PostgreSQL to design data integrations, replication strategies, and query optimization approaches that support global data residency requirements and cost-effective pipeline operations.

  • Build Slack integrations (webhooks, bots, workflow automations) and leverage AI-assisted development tools (Claude, Devin/Windsurf, Cursor) to streamline engineering workflows; apply security and quality practices through SonarQube, automated testing, and shift-left security.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with product managers, analysts, architects, and senior leadership to translate business requirements into technical solutions that align with the platform’s global strategy; mentor and develop junior engineers and contribute to organizational engineering goals.

To be successful in this role, we’re seeking the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent work experience; advanced degree preferred.

  • 14+ years of software development experience with a strong understanding of how enterprise-scale microservice systems fit together; experience in the securities or financial services industry is preferred.

  • Deep expertise in Java (Spring Boot / Spring MVC) and Python with demonstrated ability to design and build production microservices that integrate into a larger platform; strong scripting skills in Bash and Groovy.

  • Strong understanding of Kubernetes in production — deploying, scaling, and troubleshooting containerized workloads; familiarity with how KEDA, Helm, service mesh (Consul or Istio), and related components work together within the broader platform.

  • Proficiency with Terraform for infrastructure provisioning and management in Azure Cloud; experience with cost optimization and multi-region considerations; Linux systems administration (Debian/Ubuntu) including performance tuning and security.

  • Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines as code (GitHub, Jenkins - Groovy-based pipelines); experience with Harness for continuous delivery preferred.

  • Experience with observability and APM platforms such as New Relic — building dashboards, alerts, and SLOs; proficiency with SonarQube for static analysis and code quality enforcement.

  • Proficient in relational databases (PostgreSQL) — schema design, query optimization, stored procedures; familiarity with Snowflake for analytics, data platform integrations, and global data residency considerations.

  • Experience with supply-chain security tooling (Chainguard, Artifactory, image signing/SBOMs), Slack integrations, and AI-assisted development tools (Claude, Devin/Windsurf, Cursor).

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills with the ability to mentor junior engineers, collaborate effectively with architects and cross-functional teams, and contribute to platform strategy in support of global expansion.
