Job description

Your work days are brighter here.
We're obsessed with making hard work pay off, for our people, our customers, and the world around us. As a Fortune 500 company and a leading AI platform for managing people, money, and agents, we're shaping the future of work so teams can reach their potential and focus on what matters most. The minute you join, you'll feel it. Not just in the products we build, but in how we show up for each other. Our culture is rooted in integrity, empathy, and shared enthusiasm. We're in this together, tackling big challenges with bold ideas and genuine care. We look for curious minds and courageous collaborators who bring sun-drenched optimism and drive. Whether you're building smarter solutions, supporting customers, or creating a space where everyone belongs, you'll do meaningful work with Workmates who've got your back. In return, we'll give you the trust to take risks, the tools to grow, the skills to develop and the support of a company invested in you for the long haul. So, if you want to inspire a brighter work day for everyone, including yourself, you've found a match in Workday, and we hope to be a match for you too.
About the Team
The Developer Tooling team builds AI-powered tools that enable our users, an open ecosystem of external developers, to build on Workday products with greater speed and effectiveness. Our developer community includes admins with little to no previous development history all the way to professional developers that have been writing software for many years. To serve this dynamic user base, the Developer Tooling team provides an array of product offerings including a browser editing experience that includes low code and no code options, all the way to plugins for traditional Software IDEs and CLI tooling.
In this team you will work closely with engineers, product managers, and other cross-functional peers to turn business goals into well-scoped, high-quality engineering work. Within our team we value a team first mentality, lifting each other up, and ensuring that we are delivering the product features that our customers will truly value.
About the Role
As a Full Stack Developer on the Developer Tooling team, you will help shape the tools that define how developers build on Workday. You will work across the stack - from React-based interfaces to Node.js backend services - delivering features for App Builder, the Workday CLI, and adjacent developer-facing products. Your work will directly impact how easily developers can adopt, extend, and build on the Workday platform.
You will partner closely with peers, product owners, and designers to plan, build, test, and deliver high-quality software that helps our developer community succeed. This role is a strong fit for someone who enjoys full-stack ownership, takes pride in well-tested and maintainable code, and is energized by building tools that other developers rely on every day.
In this role, you will:
  • Act as a Directly Responsible Individual (DRI), driving ambiguous, complex problems from initial concept to production. You are comfortable defining success metrics, aligning stakeholders, and leading small, high-impact teams to deliver scalable solutions
  • Contribute to and deliver new and existing features for App Builder, the CLI, and other developer tools, with a focus on scalability, performance, and a high-quality developer experience.
  • Collaborate with peers, product owners, and designers to scope, plan, and ship features in an agile environment.
  • Discover and troubleshoot issues within the existing architecture and codebase, identifying opportunities for improvement and keeping the platform healthy and forward-looking.
  • Support developer-facing documentation, onboarding flows, and tooling improvements that make the platform easier to adopt and extend.
  • Contribute to release planning by evaluating the effort, risk, and priority of planned features.
  • Help improve team productivity by contributing to process improvements and engineering best practices

About You
Basic Qualifications
  • 4+ years of professional experience building and supporting multi-tier or full stack web software
  • 4+ years of deep proficiency in TypeScript/JavaScript, including mandatory experience with React
  • 4+ years of experience in Node.js for backend service development
  • 4+ years experience developing RESTful APIs and manage complex third-party API integrations
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience

Other Qualifications
  • Familiarity with large language model integration strategies, such as OpenAI-compatible APIs, data streaming, and tool/function calling, with an understanding of agentic architectures and the Model Context Protocol (MCP) as a producer or consumer.
  • Experience engineering production-grade backend services, with the ability to implement real-time streaming (SSE/WebSockets) . Knowledge of Kotlin or Spring Boot is a plus.
  • Proficiency in modern frontend technologies including React, HTML, and CSS, with experience using design systems and reusable component libraries to deliver consistent, high-quality developer-facing interfaces.
  • Commitment to testing methodologies using frameworks such as Jest, React Testing Library, JUnit, Cypress, or similar, with the ability to author stable, reliable tests for asynchronous logic and complex interaction patterns.
  • Experience with application observability, including error tracking (e.g., Sentry), metrics instrumentation, and product analytics, as well as familiarity with CI/CD workflows via GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or similar tools.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills, with experience working across teams on shared dependencies such as security and compliance reviews, and an appreciation for technical writing as a core team deliverable.

The following are advantageous but not required:
  • Experience creating CLI tools using Node.js or Go.
  • Experience with cloud development technologies and platforms (AWS, Kubernetes, Helm).
  • Experience with design systems or component libraries.
  • Hands-on experience with AI coding tools such as Cursor, Claude Code.
