What does a Junior Embedded C Developer do?

A Junior Embedded C Developer assists in designing, developing, and testing software for embedded systems using the C programming language. They often work on microcontrollers and hardware devices, writing code that interacts directly with hardware components. Their responsibilities may also include debugging, code optimization, and supporting senior developers on larger projects. This role is ideal for those with a background in computer science or electronics and a strong interest in low-level programming.

What are some common challenges faced by Junior Embedded C Developers when transitioning from academic projects to real-world embedded systems work?

Junior Embedded C Developers often find that working on commercial embedded systems introduces complexities not encountered in academic settings. Common challenges include understanding and working with hardware constraints, such as limited memory or processing power, and integrating with existing codebases and legacy systems. Additionally, juniors may need to quickly adapt to rigorous testing and debugging tools specific to embedded environments, as well as collaborating closely with hardware engineers and cross-functional teams. Overcoming these challenges helps build a strong foundation for future advancement in embedded systems development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Junior Embedded C Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior Embedded C Developer, you need a solid understanding of C programming, embedded systems concepts, and a relevant degree in computer science or electronics. Familiarity with microcontroller platforms (like ARM or AVR), debugging tools, and version control systems such as Git is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies enable the development of reliable embedded solutions and efficient collaboration within engineering teams.

Job description

Eaton's Electrical Sector - Americas (ES/A) Systems Team is seeking a Model-Based System Design Specialist to join the team. The preferred location for this position is Raleigh, NC; Moon Township, PA could also be considered. Candidates must be local and commutable to one of these offices as relocation assistance is not available. Immigration sponsorship is not available.
The expected annual salary range for this role is $113000 - $165000 a year.
Please note the salary information shown above is a general guideline only. Salaries are based upon candidate skills, experience, and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.
What you'll do:
Eaton's Electrical Sector - Americas (ES-A) is seeking a Model-Based System Design (MBSD) Specialist to support the adoption and execution of model-centric engineering practices across divisional product development programs. This role applies Model-Based System Design, integrating Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and Model-Based Design (MBD) principles to strengthen requirements clarity, system architecture modeling, plant and controls simulation, and virtual analysis workflows across products such as UPS systems, power electronics converters, industrial drives, and datacenter power-distribution technologies.
The Specialist will collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams, such as systems, controls, firmware, hardware, and power electronics, to develop system and component level models, support requirement decomposition, execute simulation workflows, and help drive consistency and maturity of Model-Based Engineering practices across ES-A programs.
Responsibilities:
• Support model-based development workflows, including plant modeling, control algorithm development, system level simulation, and early phase virtual validation.
• Develop and maintain Simulink/Stateflow models for system and component behavior across power electronics, UPS systems, datacenter power distribution, electric drives, and other control centric applications.
• Assist with architecture and requirements modeling, including SysML/System Composer functional structures, behavioral models, and requirement decomposition.
• Perform system level analysis through co-simulation of plant and control models, virtual performance assessments, tradeoff studies, and early phase concept evaluations.
• Apply model-based verification techniques, including MIL/SIL analysis, Model Advisor quality checks, requirement linked test execution, and simulation based behavioral validation.
• Support auto code generation workflows by structuring models for C/C++ integration into embedded firmware.
• Collaborate with cross functional engineering teams, such as firmware, software, hardware, systems, and power electronics, to align requirements, architecture, and model-based artifacts.
• Contribute to modeling standards, documentation, reusable libraries, templates, model structures, and modeling guidelines.
• Support domain specific modeling needs for converters, inverters, UPS topologies, power quality systems, motion/drive systems, and other simulation driven applications.
• Advance MBSD and MBSE workflows by updating processes, enhancing modeling automation, and refining toolchain configurations.
Qualifications:
BASIC (Required)
• Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited institution.
• Minimum of 7 years of experience in Model-Based System Design (MBSD) for embedded control system development, with strong application of model-based workflows in domains such as power electronics and power systems. Candidates with a master's degree may qualify with at least 5 years of relevant professional experience, and candidates with a Ph.D. may qualify with at least 4 years of relevant professional experience.
• For non-Eaton employees: Eaton will not consider applicants who require employment-based immigration sponsorship or support for this position. This includes, but is not limited to, CPT, OPT, STEM OPT, F-1 to H-1B, H-1B cap registration, O-1, E-3, TN status, I-485 job portability, or similar sponsorship or support needs.
PREFERRED
• Master's or Ph.D. degree in systems engineering, control systems, power electronics, mechatronics, or a related engineering discipline.
• At least 3 years of experience working in domains such as power electronics, UPS systems, drives, converter-based architectures, or related power system technologies.
• Demonstrated experience modeling power electronics converters, UPS systems, drives, or datacenter power infrastructure applications using model-based workflows.
• Experience with System Composer, SysML, IBM Rhapsody, or similar architecture modeling tools.
• Familiarity with requirements management tools such as DOORS NG, Jama, or Simulink Requirements.
• Experience integrating plant and controls models with firmware or software to support MIL, SIL, or co-simulation workflows.
• Experience with auto code generation workflows and embedded C/C++ integration.
• Ability to interpret engineering requirements and contribute to requirement decomposition and system model alignment.
• Strong communication, documentation, and teamwork abilities.
