Job description

Description

The Junior Inspector performs daily assigned inspection tasks in a training capacity preparatory to assuming the duties of an Inspector. Assignments follow a plan of on-the-job training, the primary purpose of which is to provide experienced inspection personnel for future highway projects. The work includes measuring, testing, and checking materials, methods, and installations to ensure conformance by the Contractor with the plans, specifications, and the contract. Supervisory control is intensive initially but progressively decreases as knowledge of the work increases. Projects are located throughout South Carolina, and assignments may vary based on business needs

Requirements

Detailed responsibilities include but are not limited to the performance of duties in the following areas:

  • Inspect excavations, drainage structures, road surfaces, and structures to compare the work performed with plans and specifications, confer frequently with higher level Inspectors or engineering personnel to clarify, or interpret details. 
  • Check elevations against reference points using a hand level or wye level. Prepare routine reports and records involving the application of basic geometric and trigonometric principles. Learn use of level and transit survey instruments. 
  • Prepare an "Inspector's Daily Report," which includes the details of the Contractor's work activities and lists the location of work, materials, equipment, and labor forces used. 
  • Become familiar with plans, specifications, standards, and related material when not occupied with regular assignments or whenever so directed by higher level Inspectors. 
  • Advise Contractor's supervisory personnel of necessary actions to conform to plans and Specifications. 
  • Assist in preparing project records.

  • ACI (American Concrete Institute) - ACI  or WACEL Concreate I - WACEL.ORG
  • SCDOT Concrete Level 1&2 - SCDOT
  • SCDOT Foundations - SCDOT
  • 10 Hour OSHA Safety Training - OSHA
  • CEPSCI (Sediment Control Inspector) - SCDOT
  • Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control - SCDOT Approved Provider

Supervisory Responsibility

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.


Work Environment

This job is performed in a professional office environment and/or transportation construction job sites located throughout South Carolina. This role routinely uses field and standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, tablets, digital cameras, nuclear gauges, surveying tools and other field-testing equipment materials. Projects are located throughout South Carolina, and assignments may vary based on business needs

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; climb, drive; lift things, use hands; and reach with hands and arms.


Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. This position typically works 40 or more hours per week. Day shifts usually start between 6:00 and 9:00 a.m. and last 8 to 10 hours. Project assignments can also require night or weekend work. Flexibility to meet client or contractor schedule is important.


Travel

This position may require travel throughout the state depending on project needs and assignment. While some assignments may be located within a reasonable commuting distance, others may require extended regional travel or overnight stays. Overnight travel may be required when project locations are beyond a reasonable daily commute.
