Job description

Farnsworth Group is seeking an Electrical Project Engineer in one of the posting locations below. In this role, you will serve as a senior technical lead for the planning, design, and execution of electrical building systems projects. This role blends advanced design capability with project leadership, client coordination, and mentorship responsibility, and is expected to drive high-quality delivery across multiple concurrent assignments
Posting Locations: Lisle, Normal, Peoria, Champaign, or Springfield, IL; or St. Louis, MO
What You'll Do:
  • Lead electrical system design for building projects, including service distribution, normal and emergency power, lighting, lighting controls, and related support systems.
  • Take ownership of discipline-specific deliverables from schematic design through bidding and construction, ensuring technical quality, code compliance, and coordination.
  • Prepare, review, and approve engineering calculations, equipment selections, drawing packages, and specifications.
  • Manage discipline budgets, schedules, staffing needs, and project priorities in coordination with project managers and other practice leaders.
  • Interface directly with clients, architects, contractors, and internal teams to resolve technical issues, clarify scope, and maintain project momentum.
  • Lead construction administration tasks, including submittal review, RFI responses, site observations, and issue resolution during installation.
  • Mentor junior engineers and designers, provide technical review, and support the development of department standards and best practices.
  • Assist with proposals, project setup, fee planning, and technical input for business development efforts.

What You'll Need:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Typically, 8-12+ years of experience in electrical design for building systems projects.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
  • Strong experience delivering electrical designs for commercial, healthcare, institutional, laboratory, or other complex facility types.
  • Advanced knowledge of applicable codes, constructability considerations, and multidisciplinary coordination requirements.
  • High proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, and preparation of detailed construction documents and specifications.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead projects, mentor staff, and manage multiple priorities without sacrificing technical quality.

Nice To Haves: (optional; not all jobs will have this separate list)
  • Experience with commissioning support, system startup coordination, or post-occupancy issue resolution.
  • Background in fast-track, design-build, or highly phased renovation projects.
  • Familiarity with Bluebeam, lighting analysis software, or other discipline-supporting technical tools.
