Our challenge

We are seeking a highly motivated Java Backend Developer, candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, testing, and maintaining scalable server-side applications using Java and the Spring ecosystem. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in Java, Spring Boot, RESTful APIs, microservices, cloud platforms, databases, and Agile development practices.

Additional Information*

The base salary for this position will vary based on geography and other factors.In accordance with law, the base salary for this role if filled within Calgary, AB is CAD $85k - CAD $95k/year & benefits (see below).

The Role

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and maintain server-side applications using Java and Spring/Spring Boot frameworks.
  • Write clean, efficient, and testable code following best practices and design patterns.
  • Collaborate with front-end developers, architects, and product managers to deliver high-quality solutions.
  • Design and manage RESTful APIs and microservices.
  • Optimize application performance, scalability, and reliability.
  • Participate in code reviews, mentoring junior developers, and contributing to continuous improvement.
  • Develop unit and integration tests to ensure quality and maintainability.
  • Integrate third-party APIs and external systems as required.
  • Ensure application security, data protection, and compliance with industry standards.
  • Maintain CI/CD pipelines and support DevOps practices for deployment and monitoring.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in computer science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in Java back-end development.
  • Strong expertise in Spring Framework (Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Spring Data, Spring Security).
  • Experience with RESTful APIs, microservices architecture, and cloud platforms (AWS/Azure/GCP).
  • Strong understanding of SQL and NoSQL databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Redis).
  • Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD tools like Jenkins, GitLab, or GitHub Actions.
  • Proficiency with version control systems (Git) and agile methodologies (Scrum/Kanban).
  • Experience with message brokers (e.g., Kafka, RabbitMQ) is a plus.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Preferred, but not required:

  • Experience with Kafka, RabbitMQ, or other messaging technologies.
  • Knowledge of event-driven architecture.
  • Experience with OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, and JWT.
  • Familiarity with API gateways and service discovery.
  • Experience with JUnit, Mockito, Testcontainers, or WireMock.
  • Knowledge of monitoring and observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, ELK Stack, Datadog, or New Relic.
  • Experience with Terraform, CloudFormation, or other infrastructure-as-code tools.
  • Knowledge of Domain-Driven Design, Clean Architecture, or twelve-factor application principles.
  • Experience working on high-volume, high-availability, or financial services applications.
