Description

We are seeking a hands-on senior software engineer who can solve complex backend and cloud challenges while contributing across the full stack. The successful candidate will take ownership from technical design through production deployment, work on high-volume customer-facing applications, mentor developers and help shape technical direction.

About the Team

Purolator Digital Channels is part of Purolator's IT organization and is responsible for developing and engineering customer-facing applications. Our goal is to deliver reliable, scalable digital solutions that support Purolator's position as Canada's leading freight, parcel and logistics provider.

Responsibilities
  • Lead technical design and solution discussions for medium-to-large initiatives, translating functional requirements into secure, scalable and maintainable designs.
  • Develop and maintain APIs, event-driven services, cloud functions and web application features using Java, Python, Angular and AWS.
  • Design and support serverless and distributed architectures using services such as AWS Lambda, API Gateway, SQS, SNS, S3, DynamoDB and Aurora PostgreSQL.
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines, contribute to cloud architecture decisions and support controlled production deployments.
  • Write and maintain automated unit, integration, contract, API and end-to-end tests while promoting TDD and BDD practices.
  • Perform code reviews, improve code quality, reduce technical debt and maintain strong automated test coverage.
  • Troubleshoot production issues, monitor application health and performance, and use logs, metrics and tracing to identify root causes.
  • Identify and remediate software vulnerabilities, upgrade dependencies and apply secure coding practices aligned with OWASP guidance.
  • Optimize application performance, database queries and cloud costs without compromising reliability or maintainability.
  • Collaborate with Product Owners, QA, architects and other stakeholders throughout development, testing, UAT and release activities.
  • Prepare clear technical documentation, including solution designs, component designs, deployment information and operational guidance.
  • Mentor junior and intermediate developers, share knowledge and promote consistent engineering standards across the team.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools responsibly to improve productivity, code quality, testing and documentation.
Experience

Backend Development

  • 7+ years of experience building and supporting enterprise applications in cloud environments.
  • Strong Java and Spring Boot development experience, including REST APIs, Maven, JSON and service integration.
  • Practical Python experience, including AWS Lambda development, boto3 and pytest.

Frontend Development

  • Hands-on experience with Angular, TypeScript, HTML and CSS.

AWS and Cloud Engineering

  • Proven experience with AWS Lambda, API Gateway, SQS, SNS, S3, CloudWatch, IAM, DynamoDB and Aurora PostgreSQL.
  • Experience designing, deploying, monitoring and troubleshooting production cloud applications.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code, preferably AWS CloudFormation.

Data and Integration

  • Strong PostgreSQL and SQL skills, including data modelling, indexing and query performance tuning.
  • Experience with DynamoDB and integrating REST or SOAP services.

Testing and Delivery

  • Experience with JUnit 5, Mockito, pytest, Postman and REST Assured or equivalent testing tools.
  • Solid understanding of unit, integration, contract and API testing, automated testing, mocking, TDD and BDD.
  • Experience with GitHub Actions or a comparable CI/CD platform.

Leadership and Collaboration

  • Ability to lead technical discussions, review designs and code, mentor developers and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong ownership, problem-solving and debugging skills, with the ability to work independently and manage changing priorities.
Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate enjoys solving complex technical problems, takes ownership from design through production and is committed to clean, maintainable and well-tested software. They are comfortable working across Java, Python, Angular and AWS; mentoring teammates; improving engineering practices; and balancing delivery speed with quality, security and operational reliability.

  • Experience with CloudWatch Insights, AWS X-Ray, Security Hub, EventBridge, Step Functions, ECS/Fargate or CloudFront.
  • Experience with SonarCloud, OpenAPI/Swagger, microservices and observability practices.
  • Experience with application or product feature design and high-volume customer-facing systems.
  • Experience using GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude or similar AI-assisted development tools in a professional software engineering environment.

Language Requirement: Proficiency in English is required for this position due to the frequent communications that must be conducted in English with various stakeholders. This requirement is justified by the nature of the responsibilities and operational needs.
