Jr Devops Engineer information

What is a Jr DevOps Engineer?

Jr DevOps Engineers are entry-level professionals who assist in bridging the gap between software development and IT operations. They help automate processes, manage infrastructure, and support continuous integration and deployment pipelines. Their responsibilities typically include maintaining servers, troubleshooting deployment issues, scripting automation tasks, and working closely with both developers and system administrators to ensure smooth delivery of software updates. Jr DevOps Engineers often gain experience with cloud platforms, configuration management tools, and monitoring solutions as they grow in their roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Jr DevOps Engineer?

To thrive as a Jr DevOps Engineer, you need a solid understanding of software development, system administration, and fundamental networking concepts, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with CI/CD tools (like Jenkins or GitLab CI), cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure), and scripting languages (like Python or Bash) is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and a collaborative mindset help you stand out in this role. These skills and qualities are vital for ensuring smooth software delivery, quick issue resolution, and effective teamwork across development and operations.

What are some typical challenges faced by Jr DevOps Engineers when working in cross-functional teams?

Jr DevOps Engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting to rapid changes in project requirements and learning to communicate effectively with both development and operations colleagues. Balancing priorities between deploying new features and maintaining system stability can be tricky, especially when collaborating with teams that have differing goals or timelines. Proactively seeking feedback, documenting processes, and staying open to mentorship can help address these challenges and foster smoother teamwork.

Job description

NOV's Cranesmart and Rigsmart businesses develop wireless safety, monitoring, and data-acquisition solutions for cranes, drilling, workover, and snubbing operations. Our products help protect personnel and equipment, reduce non-productive time, and improve operational visibility in demanding environments.

We are seeking an intermediate-to-senior Embedded Software Developer or Engineer to support the continued development and modernization of the LMI5 platform serving both Cranesmart and Rigsmart products. The LMI5 is a touchscreen display, wireless receiver, and control module that presents critical operating information, warnings, and safety-related functions to crane operators.

This is a hands-on role focused primarily on leading development of embedded software and firmware. The successful candidate will contribute throughout the product lifecycle, from requirements and implementation through testing, release, troubleshooting, and field deployment. The position level will be based on the candidate's experience and demonstrated technical leadership.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or degree in computer engineering, computer science, software engineering, electrical engineering, or a related discipline-or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Five or more years of embedded software or firmware development experience.
  • Strong C and C++ skills on microcontroller or resource-constrained platforms.
  • Experience with embedded communications such as CAN bus, Modbus, TCP/IP, serial, MQTT, OPC UA, or TLS.
  • Experience with real-time systems, device drivers, sensor integration, touchscreen interfaces, industrial controls, or safety-related applications.
  • Familiarity with embedded interfaces such as GPIO, UART, IC, SPI, and PWM.
  • Experience with debugging, logging, automated testing, Git-based workflows, and maintaining legacy embedded applications.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, organizational, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work safely in industrial environments and travel when required.
  • For candidates hired under an Engineer classification, eligibility for registration with APEGA is required. A P.Eng. designation is an asset but is not mandatory.
