Jr Data Analyst information

What are some common challenges a Jr Data Analyst faces when transitioning from academic work to a professional environment?

Jr Data Analysts often find that adapting to the pace and expectations of a professional workplace can be challenging compared to academic projects. In a real-world setting, data may be messy or incomplete, requiring analysts to spend significant time on data cleaning and validation. Additionally, Jr Data Analysts may need to quickly learn company-specific tools and balance multiple projects with tight deadlines. Collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams—such as engineering, product, or marketing—also becomes important for delivering actionable insights that support business goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Jr Data Analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Jr Data Analyst, you need a solid understanding of statistics, data analysis, and foundational knowledge in SQL or Excel, typically supported by a relevant degree such as in mathematics, statistics, or computer science. Familiarity with data visualization tools (like Tableau or Power BI) and programming languages such as Python or R is highly beneficial. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for interpreting data and sharing insights with stakeholders. These competencies enable accurate data-driven decision-making and ensure clear, actionable reporting within organizations.

What is the difference between Jr Data Analyst vs Data Analyst?

Jr Data Analysts are typically entry-level, requiring fewer credentials, and work under supervision. Both roles are vital in data-driven industries, but the Jr Data Analyst position serves as a stepping stone toward becoming a full Data Analyst.

How much do junior data analysts get paid?

Junior data analysts typically earn between $50,000 and $70,000 annually, depending on location, industry, and experience. Entry-level roles often require proficiency in tools like Excel, SQL, or Python, and may include benefits such as training and career development opportunities.

How to get a job as a Jr Data Analyst with no experience?

To get a junior data analyst position with no experience, focus on building foundational skills in Excel, SQL, and data visualization tools like Tableau or Power BI through online courses or certifications. Gain practical experience by working on personal projects, volunteering, or completing internships to demonstrate your abilities to employers.

A Jr. Data Analyst collects, organizes, and analyzes data to help organizations make informed decisions. They often use tools like Excel, SQL, or data visualization software and may assist in preparing reports or dashboards under supervision. Job description

About Citylitics Inc.
Citylitics delivers predictive intelligence on where, how, and why infrastructure investments will occur across North America.

Infrastructure includes the foundational systems that shape our quality of life: water, transportation, transit, roads and highways, broadband, and power. It represents a multi-trillion-dollar market and a 20+ year megatrend in North America.

Citylitics transforms millions of documents across more than 40,000 cities, utilities, and public agencies into real-time market signals and high-value sales intelligence. Leading infrastructure vendors, engineering firms, and construction companies use the platform to identify and pre-position for major infrastructure opportunities earlier, helping them build relationships, shape project priorities, and influence scope before projects move to formal procurement.

Citylitics combines a network of AI agents, fine-tuned models, a proprietary infrastructure signals graph, and daily human-in-the-loop quality assurance workflows to deliver highly nuanced and reliable sales intelligence. The platform integrates seamlessly with CRMs, ERPs, and data lakes, embedding actionable insights directly into sales workflows so teams can prioritize the right pursuits and build stronger pipelines.

Our mission is to improve how infrastructure investments get made so critical needs can be addressed earlier and communities benefit from stronger, more resilient infrastructure.

Join Citylitics to work in a meaningful industry that will matter for decades to come while helping grow a company at the forefront of applied AI. We operate with a Results-Driven Mentality and a commitment to Raise The Bar, in a collaborative environment where Teamwork Makes the Dream Work as we tackle big challenges and celebrate wins together.

Who Are We Looking For?
Citylitics is looking for a Data Analyst to own our Custom Solutions practice. You'll scope and deliver client-specific data requests that don't fit our standard product.

You will partner directly with Sales, Customer Success, Product and leadership to triage incoming requests, assess feasibility before anything is promised to a client, query and validate data in BigQuery, and build the one-off dashboards or reports that answer a client's actual question.

This role fits someone analytical, comfortable with ambiguity, and disciplined about scope. You size up a vague ask fast, align stakeholders when it's over-committed, and educate clients on data availability and nuances while developing solution options to discuss with them. Once you've validated an approach with the customer, you hand the engineering work to the team. You don't need to be an engineer, but you need enough confidence in SQL and data structures to know what's realistic. You're also comfortable presenting data findings and methodology directly to clients and helping them interpret what the results mean. You move quickly and decisively, without overanalyzing.

This role is based in our downtown Toronto office and requires 3+ days in-office per week.
Vacancy Status:
This position is for an existing and active vacancy that Citylitics is currently seeking to fill.

What Will You Accomplish?

Triage and Scope Custom Solution Requests

You will own the front door for custom solutions requests, deciding what's worth committing to before it reaches a client.

Responsibilities include:

  • Field new custom-solution requests from Sales and Customer Success as they come in (Slack, demo follow-ups, live calls)
  • Assess feasibility and turnaround before anything is committed to a client
  • Align stakeholders when a request is over-scoped or under-priced
  • Educate clients on data availability and nuances
  • Develop solution options to discuss with the client before committing to delivery

Query, Validate, and Build One-Off Deliverables

You will do the actual data work behind each request, once it's been scoped.

Responsibilities include:

  • Query BigQuery to test and validate client-specific hypotheses
  • Build or update lightweight dashboards (Looker, etc) for one-off client deliverables
  • Disambiguate against existing coverage to avoid duplicating work

Hand Off to Engineering Once Customer Validation Is Achieved

You validate the approach with the customer before engineering builds it.
Responsibilities include:

  • Write up findings and requirements clients or account teams can act on directly
  • Hand off anything requiring pipeline or scraper-level work to engineering, with a clear spec
  • Surface it immediately when a client's own criteria don't hold up
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

Must-Have Experience

  • 2+ years of experience in data analysis, solutions consulting, business analysis, or a similar role
  • Strong SQL fluency (BigQuery a plus), comfortable self-serve querying
  • Scopes an ambiguous request before diving in and defines what "done" looks like from the start
  • Strong written and verbal communication for client-facing summaries
  • Comfortable working directly with clients or internal commercial teams under a fast turnaround pace
  • Comfortable presenting data findings and methodology directly to clients and helping them interpret results, not just retrieving data
  • Moves quickly and decisively, without overanalyzing

Nice-to-Have Experience

  • Enough SQL/notebook fluency to spec engineering work credibly (not to build it)
  • Prior consulting or client-facing analyst background
  • Familiarity with a BI/dashboarding tool (Looker, Tableau, etc.)

Benefits

Why Citylitics?

  • This is a rare opportunity to influence positive change within one of the biggest societal challenges of our generation: sustainable public infrastructure.
  • You get to support a disruptive solution with a compelling value proposition into an industry that is eager to hear from you and in a market with no direct competition.
  • We live at the cross section of infrastructure, scaleup and data science/AI. There is no other team like us in Toronto.
  • There is no corporate bureaucracy here. You will accomplish more here in a few months than what you would in a few years at a large, entrenched technology company.
  • We believe that Data and AI will play an outsized role in our future, so we equip every team member with access to Generative AI tools and our full Data Universe to enhance their productivity and encourage innovation through experimentation.
  • We are proud to offer every CityZen in-role professional growth, skill-based development & learning, and internal promotion opportunities.
  • We work hard, we play together, we win as a team! We are on a mission to solve infrastructure while savoring the moment and celebrating the little details along the way.

Citylitics is an equal opportunity employer. We are passionate about providing a safe workplace where everyone is accepted and has the opportunity to grow with us. We are committed to making diversity and inclusivity part of our culture!
