Interventional Radiology Division Chief/Medical Director

UNC Health is seeking a Division Chief of Interventional Radiology and Medical Director for Interventional Radiology at UNC Health Johnston. This is a fully clinical, onsite leadership position responsible for supporting, overseeing, and growing Interventional Radiology services at UNC Health Johnston locations in Smithfield and Clayton, North Carolina. The position is based exclusively at the Johnston Health sites and focuses on delivering high-quality, patient-centered interventional care within a community hospital environment.

The successful candidate will be a motivated clinician and physician leader interested in advancing Interventional Radiology services while providing a broad range of image-guided interventional procedures. This role emphasizes clinical excellence, operational leadership, multidisciplinary collaboration, and strategic expansion of procedural services aligned with the needs of the Johnston County community.

As Division Chief and Medical Director, the physician will provide clinical and operational leadership for Interventional Radiology services across Johnston Health. Responsibilities include supporting service line growth initiatives, collaborating with hospital and physician leadership, promoting quality and safety initiatives, optimizing procedural operations and access, and helping guide the long-term strategic direction of the Interventional Radiology program at Johnston Health.

Interventional Radiology services are delivered onsite at UNC Health Johnston in Smithfield and Clayton, supporting both inpatient and outpatient populations. This is a fully clinical role requiring onsite presence at both locations. No services are provided at the UNC main hospital campus.

Current Clinical Services:

  • Image-guided ablations
  • Embolization procedures
  • Image-guided biopsies
  • Shunt placements
  • Steroid injections
  • Thrombolysis
  • Vascular access procedures
  • Vascular stenting

Procedures are performed using image guidance such as ultrasound, fluoroscopy, and CT, supporting minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic care.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Perform image-guided vascular and non-vascular interventional radiology procedures in an onsite clinical setting across Smithfield and Clayton
  • Provide procedural care for inpatient and outpatient populations
  • Collaborate closely with referring physicians and multidisciplinary clinical teams
  • Actively support program growth initiatives, including expansion of procedural offerings and service capabilities at both locations
  • Participate in clinical quality assurance and quality improvement activities
  • Work collaboratively with a dedicated Interventional Radiology Advanced Practice Provider (APP) to support clinical efficiency and patient care delivery

Employment Model:

This position operates under the UNC Faculty Practice (FP) Statewide employment model and is regulated by the FP Radiology Statewide compensation plan, in accordance with UNC Health and School of Medicine policies.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

  • MD or equivalent

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

  • Board certified or board eligible Radiologist
  • Fellowship training in Interventional Radiology or equivalent clinical experience
  • Experience performing a broad range of vascular and non-vascular interventional procedures
  • Ability to practice independently in a community-based clinical setting
  • Strong interest in supporting service growth and clinical program development
