Job description

THE POSITION Join the Department of Environmental Protection as a Mining Engineer and help guide important decisions about underground mining. Your work will support public safety and environmental protection across the Commonwealth. This role provides a rewarding way to apply engineering skills to real world challenges.

As a Mining Engineer, you will perform the following duties: Permit Review: Review permit applications and draft Records of Decision for underground coal extraction Subsidence Analysis: Assess mining permits and proposals to identify subsidence risks and recommend protective measures Regulatory Evaluation: Identify regulatory concerns related to mining impacts and propose solutions Impact Monitoring: Monitor mine maps and evaluate mining progress to ensure compliance with laws and permits Technical Coordination: Work with specialized professionals to evaluate effects of mining on structures and natural features Interested in learning more.

Work Schedule and Additional Information: Full-time employment Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch. Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, up to 3 days per week.

In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Coal Center. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time.

Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $75,658.00 (before taxes). REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Experience and Training Requirements: Two years as a Mining Engineering Specialist (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or Three years of professional experience in mining engineering, and a bachelor's degree in mining engineering; or Four years of professional experience in mining engineering, and possession of a valid Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists; or Three years of professional mining engineering experience, and possession of a valid Professional Engineer license issued by the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists. Graduate study in mining engineering may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Conditions of Employment: This position requires possession of a valid Pennsylvania driver's license. This position requires possession of a valid Professional Engineer license issued by the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists. Other Requirements: PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title.
