Job Summary

The Director of Retiree Center manages the UC Davis Retiree Center team and operations dedicated to retiree, emeriti, and affiliate engagement programs. The Director implements and helps establish departmental goals and objectives, assures the accountability and stewardship of department human, financial, and often physical resources in compliance with departmental and organizational goals and objectives, and ensures the team adheres to defined internal controls. This position implements and evaluates systems and procedures in alignment with DEVAR policy and procedure.

The Director of Retiree Center guides and advises programs and outreach strategy for the UC Davis Retiree Center and related affiliate engagement initiatives across both the Davis and Sacramento campuses dedicated to identifying, building, nurturing and maintaining effective relationships with retirees of UC Davis. The Director serves as an advocate for the institution to its various donor and alumni populations. This position receives assignments in the form of objectives and determines how to use resources to meet schedules and goals that support affiliate engagement across the institution.

This position collaborates closely with internal partners to maximize outreach, volunteer participation, and constituent connections. The incumbent works closely with the central development office and CAAA leadership to execute annual giving and stewardship efforts, and key engagement events, including initiatives such as Give Day, reunions, and digital campaigns. This position designs, implements, and manages projects that strengthen long term engagement between the university and retired faculty, staff, emeriti, and affiliate communities.

This position requires good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions, and works collaboratively, and collegially as part of a large, matrix organization.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree, or equivalent combination of training and experience
• Experience providing operational leadership, program oversight, and strategic support for constituent-facing programs or engagement initiatives supporting alumni relations, advancement, fundraising support, donor relations, external relations, annual giving programs, stewardship initiatives, affiliate, retiree, emeriti, or volunteer leadership programs.
• Demonstrated experience interacting with high-level volunteers, donors, trustees, advisory boards, campaign councils, or governing bodies, with accountability for reputational, philanthropic, or political outcomes.
• Organizational, strategic planning, and project management skills sufficient to independently manage multiple priorities, events, programs, and operational activities with competing deadlines for retiree engagement, volunteer governance, stewardship, and pipeline development. Ability to steward and improve governance frameworks, volunteer leadership pipelines, and institutional engagement standards that shape long-term retiree engagement relations strategy.
• Advanced political acumen, diplomacy, and negotiation skills to build relationships with senior administrators, influential alumni, campaign leaders, executive volunteers, and board members. Advanced skill to recognize, address, and mitigate sensitive constituency concerns, reputational issues, or political dynamics.
• Advanced written, verbal, interpersonal, and listening skills, including persuasive communication, and the ability to ascertain and shape constituency perceptions.

Preferred Qualifications

• Awareness, knowledge, and skill in applying inclusion to one's work. A profound belief in the value of a safe workforce and a commitment to achieve this goal through collaboration and team building, working cooperatively with a large group of department and campus constituencies.
• Experience in developing and directing stakeholder engagement, preferably in higher education or other non-profit settings.
• Experience working in higher education with affiliate groups.
• Knowledge of best practices in retiree, emeriti, alumni, or affiliate engagement programming.
• Experience developing best practices, training programs, or strategic frameworks that elevate organizational practice.

Development & Alumni Relations (DEVAR) provides leadership in building enduring public trust, understanding, and support for UC Davis and its mission of teaching, research, and public service. DEVAR provides leadership, coordination and support services to help the university meet its mission of research, teaching and service by building philanthropic support and executing approved fundraising programs that support the university's highest priorities and initiatives.
