Key responsibilities

  • Manage an assigned book of customers by quoting, booking, sourcing, negotiating carriers, tracking loads, and closing out shipments.

  • Source, vet, and negotiate with carriers to build a reliable capacity base while maintaining margins.

  • Set appointments, run check calls, handle accessorials and exceptions, and ensure timely delivery and accurate data entry in the TMS.

Job description

Own your customers. Move the freight. Grow the book.

Wheelhouse Logistics is a growing freight brokerage in Sacramento, expanding fast and building the team to match. We know freight, we run it well, and we're hiring the people who want to grow with us.

This is a cradle-to-grave role. You own an assigned book of customers as their account manager, and you run the freight end to end: quoting, booking, sourcing and negotiating carriers, tracking every load to delivery, and closing it out clean. You are not handed leads by a sales team and you are not buried in someone else's back office. The book is yours, and the outcome is yours.

It takes two things most people do not have at once. The drive to win capacity and hold margin, and the discipline to never let a load slip. If you have both, keep reading.

What You'll Own

  • Your book. Manage a set of assigned accounts as the primary point of contact. Grow them through consistency, straight answers, and freight that shows up on time.
  • The full lifecycle. Quote, book, cover, dispatch, track, and close out every load on your accounts, from pickup through delivery and POD.
  • Carrier sales. Source, vet, and negotiate with carriers. Build a reliable capacity base for your lanes and hold your margin while you do it.
  • Load execution. Set appointments, run check calls, handle accessorials and exceptions, and catch the problem before it becomes a claim.
  • Clean data. Keep every shipment accurate in the TMS. Good data is how the load stays on the rails and how you get paid correctly.

What You Bring

Must have:

  • Follow-through under pressure. You can run a live board of loads without dropping the detail that matters.
  • Comfort negotiating. Rates, carriers, and the occasional hard customer conversation do not rattle you.
  • Organization and ownership. You track your own commitments and you do not need to be chased.
  • A customer-service instinct. You treat the person on the other end of the load like the relationship is worth keeping.

Nice to have (and trainable if you don't):

  • Freight brokerage or 3PL experience, especially partial truckload or LTL.
  • TMS experience.
  • Familiarity with carrier vetting and compliance tools
  • Prior account management or cradle-to-grave brokerage experience.

Your First 90 Days

We hire experienced brokers who can run their book on day one, and we hire early-career people we believe will get there. Either way, you get a real path.

  • Weeks 1 to 4: Learn our systems, our niche, and the workflow. Shadow live loads and start handling execution on existing accounts with support close by.
  • Weeks 5 to 8: Take ownership of your book. Run your own carrier sales and load execution with a manager reviewing margin and coverage alongside you.
  • Weeks 9 to 12: Operate cradle-to-grave on your accounts with the coaching dialed to what you actually need. Start pushing your book's growth.

What You'll Get

  • $72k Base Salary DOE
  • Margin-based bonus tied to the gross margin you generate on your book. When your accounts perform, you get paid for it.
  • Direct coaching from operators who actually run freight, not a slide deck.
  • Modern tools: TAI TMS, carrier vetting platforms, and AI tools we build into the workflow.
  • Medical, dental, and vision.
  • 401(k) with company match.
  • PTO.
  • A clear path to grow your book, your comp, and your responsibilities.

Who Thrives Here

The people who do well here hold two gears at once. They are competitive, self-motivated, and relentless about winning capacity and growing accounts. They are also accountable, organized, and reliable to the last detail, because on a cradle-to-grave book, follow-through is where the money is made or lost. We are team-first. Nobody here wins by letting a teammate fail.

We are not looking for perfect. We are looking for people who want to become exceptional and are willing to do the work to get there. If you are already an A player, we want to meet you. If you are early in your career and coachable, willing to earn it, we want to meet you too.
