How you will make an Impact (Job Summary)
SPX is a diverse team of unique individuals who all make an impact. As the Controller, you will serve as a senior financial leader for the Hydronics business, providing accounting leadership, financial governance, operational insight, and strategic decision support across manufacturing, commercial, and functional organizations. You will be responsible for the integrity and timely delivery of financial statements, forecasts, budgets, internal controls, working capital management, and accounting operations in accordance with U.S. GAAP, Sarbanes-Oxley requirements, and SPX policies.
The Controller is the senior accounting and controllership leader for the Hydronics portfolio, with responsibility across Weil-McLain, Patterson-Kelley, Sigma-Omega, and related manufacturing locations. The role owns accurate and timely reporting, accounting operations, U.S. GAAP and Sarbanes-Oxley compliance, and the control environment; provides disciplined oversight of manufacturing and commercial accounting, including rebates, sales commissions, warranty, inventory, standard costs, and manufacturing variances; partners closely with the Director of Finance, Director of Manufacturing Operations, FP&A leader, and business leadership; develops organizational capability through coaching, talent development, and succession planning within the accounting team; and supports acquisitions from diligence through integration.
What you can expect in this role (Job Responsibilities)
While each day brings new opportunities at SPX, your core responsibilities will be:
  1. Enterprise Controllership & Reporting
  • Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close and consolidation across Weil-McLain, Patterson-Kelley, Sigma-Omega, and related entities and locations; deliver complete, accurate, and ensuring complete, accurate, and timely financial reporting.
  • Ensure financial statements, general ledger activity, account reconciliations, reserves, accruals, fixed assets, inventory, and other accounting records comply with U.S. GAAP, SPX policies, reporting calendars, and internal controls.
  • Review complex and highly judgmental accounting matters, maintain strong balance-sheet discipline, and drive timely root cause resolution of discrepancies and control issues.
  • Maintain financial governance over working capital and cash conversion, including receivables, inventory, payables, credit, excess and obsolete reserves, physical inventories, and cycle counts.

  1. Manufacturing & Commercial Accounting
  • Own the financial integrity of standard costing, inventory valuation, absorption, and manufacturing variances, including material, labor, overhead, purchase price, scrap and yield, productivity, and capacity variances.
  • Partner closely with the Director of Manufacturing Operations to explain performance, challenge assumptions, validate productivity benefits, strengthen plant controls, and improve cost visibility and decision-making.
  • Establish and maintain robust end-to-end accounting and controls for customer rebates, sales commissions, and warranty programs, including accrual methodologies, approvals, reconciliations, claims, true-ups, and payment validation.
  • Ensure accurate gross-margin reporting by business unit, product, and site, and support operational, commercial, and strategic business decisions with fact-based accounting and cost insights.

3. Controls, Compliance & Systems
  • Maintain a robust internal control environment that supports compliance with U.S. GAAP, Sarbanes-Oxley requirements, SPX policies, and financial reporting standards.
  • Lead Sarbanes-Oxley compliance, internal controls, Delegation of Authority governance, audit readiness and remediation, internal and external audits, tax information packages, and record-retention requirements.
  • Govern JDE, OneStream, and related financial processes and data; drive simplification, standardization, automation, and sustainable process improvement across the Hydronics portfolio.
  • Support inorganic growth through financial due diligence, accounting assessments, purchase-accounting support, opening-balance-sheet validation, control design, systems and process integration, and post-close stabilization.
  • Identify risks early, establish clear ownership and action plans, and ensure issues are resolved promptly and sustainably.

4. Business Partnership & FP&A Interface
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the Director of Finance and business leadership on accounting implications, financial risk, working capital, investments, and operational decisions.
  • Partner with FP&A by providing high-integrity actuals, accounting judgments, operating drivers, and risk and opportunity insights that enable planning, forecasting, and performance management.
  • Support pricing, sourcing, make-or-buy, capital, and other strategic decisions; validate the financial integrity of business cases, accounting treatment, and realized benefits.
  • translate complex accounting and operational matters into clear, actionable recommendations and maintain ownership through resolution.

  1. Working Capital, Credit & Cash Management
  • Maintain oversight of working capital performance, including accounts receivable, inventory, accounts payable, and cash flow.
  • Partner with business leaders to establish and execute actions that improve receivables performance, inventory turns, payment practices, and cash conversion.
  • Oversee credit and collections policies and practices, including assessment of customer credit risk and resolution of past-due balances.
  • Monitor inventory levels, excess and obsolete reserves, physical inventory activities, cycle-count results, and inventory adjustments.
  • Review working capital trends and communicate risks, opportunities, and corrective actions to leadership.
  • Ensure appropriate financial governance and controls are maintained throughout order-to-cash, procure-to-pay, and inventory-management processes.

  1. Leadership & Organizational Capability
  • Lead, coach, and develop the accounting team; establish clear accountability, cross-training, succession plans, and high standards of execution.
  • Build strong partnerships across accounting, operations, FP&A, commercial teams, shared services, IT, tax, and corporate finance.
  • Foster a culture of integrity, constructive challenge, continuous improvement, collaboration, and disciplined follow-through.
  • Maintain an appropriately staffed organization supported by scalable processes as the business portfolio grows and evolves.

Required Experience
  • 10+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, including at least five years leading accounting professionals, including prior experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, or in a comparable accounting leadership role.
  • Demonstrated success in a multi-business-unit, multi-site manufacturing environment, with deep knowledge of standard costing, inventory accounting, absorption, and manufacturing variances.
  • Strong command of U.S. GAAP, financial reporting, Sarbanes-Oxley compliance, internal controls, close processes, and internal and external audits within a publicly traded or similarly complex organization.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting and controls for rebates, sales commissions, warranty reserves and claims, and other significant commercial programs.
  • Proven ability to partner with operations and FP&A, influence senior leaders, translate complex issues into practical actions, and move effectively between strategic priorities and hands-on execution.
  • High integrity, sound judgment, strong communication, and a record of building capable, accountable teams and improving processes and systems.
