Reports to:ย  ย  ย Director of Music and the Assistant Director of Music

St. Paulโ€™s School Music Program seeks a highly qualified jazz saxophone instructor to be part of our outstanding music program and work with exceptional high school students. Candidate must demonstrate superior playing skills with a strong knowledge of brass pedagogy to join our studio staff of 20 professional musicians. The instructor will teach weekly music lessons for the jazz saxophone to high school students of varying ability and experience. The instructor will observe the lesson schedule established by the music program, monitor attendance, assign grades, and offer written feedback to students and parents regarding progress and goals.ย  Assist students in preparation for performances as needed.ย 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following; others may be assigned at any time at the discretion of the employeeโ€™s supervisor.

  • Work with students to set goals for lessons, select appropriate repertoire, help students procure music, instruct students in technique, musicality, and practice strategies, monitor musical development, provide appropriate performance opportunities when necessary, assist students with instrument maintenance and repair.
  • Use the lesson schedule and room assignment established by the music program, communicate in a timely way with students and the music program regarding schedule changes; monitor and report student attendance in accordance with school policies, enter grades and comments in a timely manner according to the Academic Advising Calendar.
  • Responsible for understanding academic calendar and daily schedule and effective use of St. Paulโ€™s School systems for communication and course management.
  • Assist students with college application processย  (letters of recommendation, audio/video recordings when requested).
  • Communicate student issues or concerns with Department Head and/or Studentโ€™s Adviser when necessary.

  • B.A. or B.M. required or equivalent professional experience as a performing musician. M.A. or M. Mus. Preferred.ย 
  • At least 3-5 years of successful private lesson teaching experience.
  • Proven record of excellent pedagogical methods and the ability to create a positive learning environment for high school age students.
  • Effective relationships with colleagues.
